Big Changes Coming

I’ve become increasingly concerned that over time this blog has become a mish-mash of too many different tones and topics.

Those who like my posts with quotos (a term I may have coined for photos with quotes) and other humorous topics may be bored with my family updates, posts on kindness throughout the world, and/or takes on parenting or relationships–and vice versa.

I believe that even my creative blogs are too general. Readers who are interested in my poetry may be bored with my songs or children’s stories, or vice versa.

So, coming soon you will have a better way to select the topics on which I write that are of the most interest to you.

In fact, another focused site has just arrived. If you enjoy my poetry, please check out “A Grateful Man’s Poetry” at http://agratefulmanspoetry.com

If you want to read a site focused on my children’s stories and books, please follow “Clyde and Friends” at http://clydeandfriends.com

While my original blog, “A Grateful Man” at russtowne.com is likely to remain my flagship, my newer sites will be focused on areas that may only be of interest to sub-sets of readers.

As sites for my favorite passions and topics are created, I plan to de-emphasize them on this flagship blog.

It is my hope that readers will have the opportunity over time to be able to focus on the topics about which we share a passion or interest and not have to deal with ones of little interest to you.

Please let me know what you think of these changes as they occur.

Thank you!

With Love,

Russ

Why I Write Children’s Books

I write children’s books because I love telling stories, especially to children. I love the looks of wonder and delight as they experience and become part of each adventure. I love children, and entertaining them. I love writing and creating imaginary worlds.

Writing children’s books enables me to bring together so many things I love, and I believe  with so much love going into each story, young children–and hopefully children of all ages–will experience love every time they read them.

Through the characters and imaginary worlds I create, I hope to help children have a better understanding of the feelings they experience such as fear, sadness, and anger, and to help them to understand that such feelings are normal, to give them hope, and to help them to work through and discover positive ways to deal with them. I write to help children of all ages feel better about themselves and the gifts they can give to the world.

I believe that if children truly take these messages to heart early in their lives that it can have a profoundly positive impact on them and on the world.

I’d love to have children of all ages who read my books experience that same wonderful feeling that one gets from a big warm hug from a dear friend and/or favorite Teddy Bear.

With Love,
Russ

E.B. White’s Planning Difficulties

“I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.”
― E.B. White

I got a chuckle out of the above quote, and thought you might too.

I think E.B. would have a much easier time of it by ensuring that what is being focused on is important for the world and a major personal passion.

Russ

Family Updates

The trip to visit my new twin grandsons and their parents in Illinois was delightful. Everyone there is healthy. I look forward to going again shortly (this time with my other son Ben, his wife Erika, and our first grandson Thomas.) My Beloved will be back in the classroom teaching a Special Ed K-1 class then and won’t be able to join us.

NEw dad with baby Alexander with pets keeping watch photo 3While we were gone, my mother had a couple of mini strokes. One completely took away her sight, but thankfully the blindness proved temporary. She is recovering well. We’ll be traveling to her tomorrow.

Also while we were in Illinois, my FIL had brain surgery. The many falls he’s had took their toll and pools of blood had formed in his skull. He too is recovering well, and we’ve been visiting him daily while in town.

So now you know why I haven’t been blogging very much lately, and that is likely to continue for a while longer.

I’m grateful for the many blessings in my life.

With Love,
Russ

The Twins and Grumbly Grumpalump

My Beloved and I are visiting our son Brian and DIL Kristi and our new twin grandsons, Alexander and Zachary.

We’re loving the time we are blessed to have with them. The twins very rarely cry during daylight hours. That’s great during the day, but not so great during the night, but thankfully there are more of us adults than there are of them so we make it work.

The twins are delightful. Each have their own distinct personality. Alexander has fair hair like his mommy, and Zachary has darker hair like his daddy.

I was holding Zachary during one of his rare fussy moments during the day, and it reminded me of when our children were like that we used to say they were getting “grungy”. So I looked down at Zachary and said, “Oh you Grungy Grumpalump” in a friendly, kidding sort of way. The word “Grumpalump” came to me just as I said the word “Grungy”.

The next thing I knew, a new children’s story began… I planned to use the title, “Grungy Grumpalump”, but double-checked what the word “grungy” meant and decided that “Grumbly” was a more accurate description of the character in my head. In that way, Grumbly Grumpalump was born.

Grumbly is a cantankerous fellow. In fact he’s mean, nasty, and grim. When he moves into the neighborhood, it’s as though a dark shadow has fallen on it. People begin to get less friendly and smile less often.

But he’s no match for little Wendy Goodlight and a pet kindness named Love.

I plan to share more about this new story on my website Clyde and Friends
at http://clydeandfriends.com. If you aren’t already following my creative adventures and misadventures at that site, I invite you to consider doing so.

With Love,
Russ

Which way? To me that is simple (but not always easy): I follow where my heart leads.
