A Gift of Trying Times

969357_482143555208667_1732702614_n (2)

I love this quote and believe in the truth and wisdom of it. Sadly, the times I typically learn and re-learn this lesson are when I need friends the most. The great news is that those are the times that I not only find out who among my “friends” are worthy of that word, but I often discover others who were true friends who I hadn’t yet recognized as such.

Trying times can be wonderful gifts in that way.

Russ

An amazing woman

Ute crafted this inspirational tribute to an exceptional woman who refused to let adversity keep her down, and went on to create a legacy that delights adults and children to this day, 166 years after her birth.

This is a story of an extraordinary woman, who depite physical difficulties followed her dream.

Margarete Steiff was born 166 years ago today, 24th July 1847 in Giengen/Germany and died of pneumonia 9th May 1909 in Giengen/Germany

She was a seamstress and founded the Margarete Steiff GMBH 1880 which makes to this day stuffed toy animals.

Margarete was a very lively, well-built child and led a carefree life until she became ill with polio at the early age of 1½. She was destined never to walk and to be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of her life.

Her mother, above all, found this very difficult to bear. She would have to care for her daughter for as long as she lived. Her daughter would never be able to take on the role of housewife and mother and, at the time, it seemed as though she had absolutely no…

If You’d Like to Meet Clyde’s Newest Friend…

If you’d like to meet Clyde’s newest friend, you’re invited to go to my blog Clyde and Friends at http:clydeandfriends.com

I just created a post for that blog that introduces a character who has a most unusual dream.

The post also describes more of my creative process from the time I come up with a one-sentence idea for a children’s story through the time all the full-color illustrations for the book are completed.

Details Regarding Books To Seriously Ill Children Around the World

This is to clarify my comments regarding my plans to send books to seriously ill children and/or hospitals or other facilities who support them around the world. I don’t want to give any false impressions.

While I hope to over time give away hundreds or thousands of my books to seriously ill children on every continent, initially the free book giveaway is likely to be fairly modest. The reasons for that include costs and logistics.

Postage for international mailing is relatively expensive and is likely to cost as much or more than the book itself in some situations.

The initial production runs are of only 100 each, and I estimate that each book in the initial run cost me over $22. The costs of having a book printed are ALL front-loaded. So why on earth would someone ever spend over $22 for each copy when they are only likely to retail for approximately one-third of that amount? The answer is that since most of the costs were absorbed in the first 100 books printed, IF there is demand for more than 100 books per title, each additional book can be printed for about one-half the retail cost.

I have no idea as to what the demand for my books will be. Hopefully, I’ll have a better idea once some of them are listed for sale on Amazon.com and elsewhere.

My guess is that about half of each of the 100 copies of the initial production runs are already spoken for based on my commitments as incentives and rewards to Kickstarter donors, and I plan to give quite a few more away to seriously ill children, but I want to have enough let over to sell on Amazon.com so that I’ll be able to have at least a little inventory in case they sell.

If they seem to be selling well, I can then order more production runs, and give more away to seriously ill children with each production run. In that way, over time I hope to give hundreds or thousands of my books to seriously ill children. But I want to do it in a sustainable way.

Also, I plan to get ideas for recipients of my books Kickstarter donors and then other of my online and physical world friends and loved ones. I plan to give higher priority to suggestions from Kickstarter donors as they helped to make this dream come true, but I plan to consider everyone’s suggestions.

Also, my bias will be to send them directly to the families of seriously ill children if possible. Since I–and probably you, too–know people on every continent except Antarctica, I believe it is likely that I’ll be able to get suggestions for each of them. And I even have a friend who has a friend who recently spent several months on Antarctica, so I might even get suggestions for that continent too.

If you know of any seriously ill children or hospitals, clinics, or other medical entities around the world who help them, I’d love to hear suggestions from you as to whom I should consider sending my books.

Please note, however that it is likely that I’ll get more suggestions than I’ll have available books from the first production runs of the first two titles, so I will most likely not be able to send books to everyone suggested.

With love,

Russ

Here is my DIL Kristi with my twin grandsons. Due to all the tubes–some of which you can see in the photo–the babies daddy (my son Brian) can hold only one at a time, but will soon be able to hold both and when he does I’ll send a photo of the three of them too. My Beloved and I will soon be visiting all of them. WAHOOO!

My Children’s Books Free To Some Seriously Ill Children, Hospitals, and/Or Libraries on Every Continent

I plan to donate some of my books to seriously ill children, children’s hospitals, and/or children’s libraries on every continent.

My Kickstarter project is now 91% funded with 6 days left! To those of you who have supported the cause, a heart-felt THANK YOU and eternal gratitude!

My team and I are working on another surprise that I believe many of you are going to love. I can’t tell you about it yet BECAUSE IT’S A SURPRISE and because we haven’t yet crossed the funding finish line by the deadline, but it is certainly looking like we are going to do so.

Please keep spreading the word about this project to give others the opportunity to help get these books into the hands of hundreds of children and their loved ones around the world so they can make these delightful characters and stories come alive in their minds and hopefully help to create a lifetime of cherished memories.

And there is still a little time left to become a critical part of this global community effort. If you have not already done so, please click on the link below, or cut and paste it into your browser, or type kickstarter.com in your browser and then in the search field type “Russ Towne” or “Clyde and I”,

Then please consider supporting the cause by:

Spreading the word to others about this opportunity

and/or

Making a pledge (any amount would help)
