thoughts to remember in the coming new year and moving onward, courtesy of mr. rogers.

Mr. Rogers became one of my heroes only after I became a middle-aged adult, but my respect for who he was and what he worked for has grown with every passing year. This world lost a wonderful blessing when he passed.

mister rogers on love

love isn’t a state of perfect caring. It is an active noun like “struggle.” to love someone is to strive to accept that person exactly the way he or she is, right here and now.

by far the most important aspect of rogers’s philosophy is the idea that you have to work to keep loving and caring about someone. it’s not a thing that happens once and then ceases. it’s a constant, lifelong process.

Mister Rogers on caring for others around you

if you could only sense how important you are to the lives of those you meet; how important you can be to the people you may never even dream of. there is something of yourself that you leave at every meeting with another person.

Mister Rogers on civic duty

we live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. it’s easy to…

More Thomas-isms

Batman Thomas Playing Under BlanketOur 3-year old grandson Thomas has a cold. After we played, it was time for his nap and for me to get back to work.

Thomas gets especially creative at nap time. His excuses can be a little unusual. I just heard him yell to My Beloved from his bed:

“Mama! My lips are dry! I need chopsticks!”

That was immediately followed by, “My superheroes will fight my cold out!”

I wouldn’t be surprised if the next thing we hear is, “My superheroes need chopsticks for their dry lips!”

From the Other Side of the Door

If you’ve seen the movie “Frozen”–and if you have young children or grandchildren you’ve probably seen it many times–you’ll probably recall the scene where the younger sister is begging her older sister who is locked behind a door to come out and play by singing, “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?”

Now anytime our three-year old grandson Thomas visits our home and My Beloved or I are on the other side of a locked door (usually going to the bathroom), Thomas knocks on the door, and sings “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” in his sweet and irresistible voice.

The choice of song is a bit ironic in that we live in sunny California and it is warm enough today inside for me to have a fan blowing to stay cool. Despite that, shortly after I send this post, I’ll be building a make-believe snowman in our living room with my grandson. You can probably guess the name Thomas wants to give to it. Olaf. Of course. Poor Frosty has been replaced by this generation with a lot of help from Disney’s marketing machine.

Another Surprise Christmas Gift: The Newspaper Article

My Interview with the Campbell Press article

As I rearranged our over-stuffed recycle bin the day after Christmas I noticed a copy of our local newspaper. In the holiday rush and with all the family we’d hosted it had been thrown into the recycle bin unread. The paper had been rained on and wrinkled, and was dated December 25, 2015. I was about to toss it aside when I noticed this blurb on the front page: “Campbell author has churned out a dozen children’s books.” It reminded me of an interview I’d had with a reporter of the publication about a month ago. The link is to a copy of the full article.

Finally Free

I’ve always gained so much more than I thought I’d lost whenever I had the courage to let go of that which I ignorantly clutched so tightly for so long.

Not Quite Ever

I found this post to be especially profound. It offers much wisdom and understanding in a relatively few words. I can’t say it was unexpected (I’ve been reading Colleen’s blog too long for that.) But it was, as is so often the case when I read her creations, a thought-provoking, insightful, and enjoyable experience.

Purple Fox and the Heebie Jeebies

I received a Christmas day surprise when I went onto Amazon.com to find Purple Fox and the Heebie Jeebies was released on Christmas Eve! This is the story that my co-writer Josh Friedman and I have been working on for months and we’re proud of the result. It is a celebration of childhood and life, diversity and uniqueness, friendship, self-acceptance, acceptance of others, kindness, and compassion.

Full functionality as to details of the listing (such as the ability to read the first few pages of the book) may take a bit longer. The paperback version of PF has been released on Amazon in the U.S. The hardcover version and availability in the UK and EU should occur soon.

I’d love to see your Customer Reviews and Book Reviews on Amazon, Goodreads, and elsewhere as that is the best way to ensure the book is able to be experienced by more children and adults.

Merry Christmas

With Love,

Russ
