Family Night Delight

Thomas with ToysIMG_0188Heidi Tickling Thomas' feet

Guess who stole the show again at our Sunday Family Night? You guessed it! Our grandson Thomas!

In the third photo, Grandma (My Beloved) is tickling him by making, (uh, how do I say this?) farty noises on the souls of his feet. He loves it–and is pretty good at being able to make “farty” noices all by himself.

Speaking of grandchildren, our second son and his wife found out that the twins they are expecting are both boys! They better start saving now to pay for the astronomical food bills they are likely to have when their kids become teenagers! I speak from experience.

Love,
Russ
P.S. I believe that I’ve shown considerable restraint by not showing a lot more photos of our grandson on this site. I figure that while he is the cutest thing in the world to us, you have your own cutest things to admire.

Health News That Got My Attention

The New England Journal of Medicine published a report on the Mediterranean diet this week that is pretty amazing. They cut off the experiment early because the results being achieved were so great that they wanted to more quickly get the word out about it. If I understand the results correctly, the rate of major cardiovascular events (myocardial infarction, stroke, or death from cardiovascular causes) was 30% lower in the groups that were on the Mediterranean diet supplemented with either extra-virgin olive oil or mixed nuts.

It appears to me that the study was rigorous, with control groups, oversight, and peer review.

Here’s the link: http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1200303?query=featured_home&&&#t=article

Summary: 4 tablespoons of olive oil daily, 3 fresh fruit servings daily, 2 vegetable servings daily, about a handful each of walnuts and almonds 3x weekly, fish 3x weekly. No red meat or commercial baked goods (pastries, cakes, cookies), no soda, no spreadable fat (butter/margarine). It is not at at all focused on cholesterol, etc like most diets.

I’m not a doctor and am not selling anything, but this to be pretty amazing news to me. Using diet alone to reduce cardiac risk 30%. That got my attention.

To Gnome Me Is To Love Me

Gnomes and Pink CameliaBubbaGnome Couple Close-UpGnome Couple With Grandchild

When My Beloved and I went on our honeymoon we were young and on a fairly tight budget. We drove to various places. During the trip we took a detour to the Oregon Caves. On our way to them, on a little two-lane road, we drove by a home whose yard was absolutely covered in Gnomes. Intrigued, we turned around and went back to look at the Gnome Home.

It turned out that is exactly what the homeowners hoped drivers would do, as they “sold” Gnomes. The inside of their home/store was covered in Gnomes too. Perhaps it was due to the magic of being on our honeymoon, or perhaps it was the magic of the Gnomes themselves, but whatever the reason, Gnomes have always had a special place in our hearts and homes, and they are always welcome.

Due to our financial situation at the time, we left that little store with only a little round pin and a calendar, but both had special meaning for us–and still do. The pin says, “To Gnome me is to love me” and depicts a young gnome couple sitting on the long neck of a goose as they fly off on their honeymoon. The calendar has a large version of that photo and 11 other large illustrations of Gnomes.

I just remembered that about 25 or more years after visiting that Gnome Home I actually began “selling” Gnomes on the internet. I called the “business” “Rusty’s Gnomes”. Of course, Gnomes aren’t really bought and sold.

They are adopted. And I’ve heard that if they don’t like who adopts them they get up and leave.

Fortunately, my adoptions must have all gone well because I never heard complaints about misbehaving Gnomes or unkind adopting families.

It was fun. I sent Gnomes to some amazing places and sometimes the kind folk would tell me stories about their Gnomes. One of the major libraries on the East Coast has one of my Gnomes proudly displayed as their mascot. Local Gnome does good!

Anyway, I say all that to explain why this post has photos of Gnomes. When I began taking photos of the Camelia, I thought it might be fun to include a Gnome couple looking at it. As you can see in the photos that accompany this post, once I was done with the flower, I decided to photograph some of my little friends who keep me and my dog Duke company in my office while I do the sometimes dry work of investment management.

You’ll probably notice in this post that the couple who starred in the first Camelia shot in the earlier post were actually looking down at their own little grandchild. As a fairly new grandfather, whenever I see those proud Gnome Grandparents they bring a smile to my face.

And then there is Bubba. He’s trying hard to stay in shape by lifting weights made out of Tinker Toys. I played with Tinker Toys as a kid and that brings back fond memories too.

I hope these photos bring a smile to your face when you see them.

Love,
Russ

Beauty and Photography

Gnomes and Pink CameliaPink HibiscusHibiscusPink Camelia(My apologies in advance to those who are experiencing bitter cold weather. This is not meant to be a bragging post. It is an appreciation and gratitude post, and perhaps a “Spring is coming” hopeful post for anyone who can use the boost right now.)

There are many reasons I love living in the Bay Area of California. Here are some of them. It’s March 2nd and I walk around outside in shorts, a T-shirt, and flip flops, the weather is comfortably warm even though we’re having a rare gray day today.

I see various flowers blooming, and the first I see right outside our front door is a beautiful camelia.

I picked one that embodied elegant beauty and put it into a little vase for My Beloved, but before giving it to her I decided to try to take a few photos of it with my iPad so I could share the flower’s beauty with you, too. I added some photos of hibiscus flowers that I took earlier. They bloom for a long time, but aren’t in bloom here at the moment.

My favorite color for flowers is orange. I’ve noticed that my eye is drawn to that color first when looking in gardens. For that reason, California Golden Poppies are extra special to me. I plan to share photos of them when they bloom in spring. In the meantime, the pink camelia is what I saw today, so that is what you get today, with the hibiscus thrown in as a “bonus”. ;-D!

May these photo’s brighten your day, and perhaps put a smile on your face.

Thank you to those excellent photographers who share such wonderful photos on your blogs and for enduring these early attempts at trying my hand at photography. You have inspired me! (So, it’s YOUR fault if you don’t like my photos!) ;-D!

Russ

The Great Gift I Got This Morning

Natures Symphony-Final Mix

I belong to a men’s group. About 50 of us meet once a month in a park with big grassy areas, various elevations, and a lot of redwoods. Long-time readers know that I love redwoods.

At our monthly meeting this morning, two of the men brought out guitars and I was called into the center of the circle. I had no idea why.

It didn’t take long to figure it out though. As I stood there the men began playing and singing a song that I’d written the lyrics to some time ago titled “Nature’s Symphony”.

I was and continue to be greatly touched by their kind gesture. It meant a lot to me that they honored the song and me in this way. I am indeed a Grateful Man.

For newer readers, a link to the song is attached. Kevin Harris wrote the music.

Sportsmanship Taken To A Wonderful New Level

This this link takes you to a video story that takes sportsmanship to another, wonderful, new level. It’s only two or three minutes long, and the last 45 seconds or so got me big-time. May it do the same for you.

The Choice

In response to a recent post titled, “One Of My Heroes And A Quote That Helps To Explain Why”, a reader asked, “How do you do that–leave it (Ed. note: hatred, bitterness, anger) behind?

That is an excellent question. Here was my reply (edited):

When one realizes that hatred, bitterness, and anger, are too heavy a burden to bear, and can consume and destroy their life, spirit, soul, and future–and they truly get that down to their core–then it becomes a choice. Wanting to is not good enough. Neither is false forgiveness, nor the “I want to forgive but I can’t” approach.

Only true forgiveness, and moving on, is what it takes to break free from the internal chains and prisons that humans so often create for themselves.

I have been stuck in such places until I realized I was only hurting myself. I decided that I wanted to be happy and FREE of the terrible burdens of hatred, bitterness, and anger, more than I wanted and needed to CLING to my hatred, bitterness, and anger. I’d kept victimizing myself by running the same old stories over and over in my head and acting the part of the victim long after the purpetrators had moved on (and probably forgotten all about me in some cases.)

I chose to stop being a “victim” and start being a survivor. That mindset helped me a lot. It helped me to do one of the most wonderful things I’ve ever done FOR MYSELF. I forgave. Truly forgave. I found the gifts that each situation had given to me. Sometimes it took a long time to find or recognize them, but they were always there.

While my hatred and bitterness are gone (and hopefully will never return!), I still sometimes briefly get angry at the actions, attitudes, or words, of myself or others.

I’m not anger-free, just mostly anger-free. And the bouts of anger rarely last more than a few seconds or minutes. I’m still a work in progress, but considering where I started, I feel great about how far I’ve come.

One Of My Heroes and a Quote That Helps To Explain Why

“As I walked out the door toward my freedom I knew that if I did not leave all the anger, hatred and bitterness behind that I would still be in prison.” –Nelson Mandela (Source: Online Wellness Network)

A Free-Range Mind

You’ve heard of free-range chickens or cattle. Well, the thought came to me when I was trying to focus on something detail-oriented and important today, that I have a free-range mind. It wanders all over the dang place!
