I Just Opened a Window

It began to feel a bit stuffy in my home office, so I just opened a window. It only took a moment, but in the space of a heart-beat magic happened. My senses were aroused by the sumptuous melodies of songbirds singing so near it seemed they’d flown into my office to share their gifts with me. The scents of rain and the flowers beneath my window melded into a potent aroma of olfactory pleasure. Inches away, great multi-colored blossoms captured my eyes, each vibrant petal an invitation to soak in its beauty and experience its exquisite softness with a touch.

Living in that moment, concerns of deadlines, challenges, fears, and commitments disappeared. As I typed the last sentence, it occurred to me I’d not nearly enough emphasized the first word. LIVING! Really LIVING! That is what I’m doing when I remove the blinders of everyday distractions from my senses and heart and truly experience the wonders all around me.

A profound sense of gratitude, joy, connectedness, and peace envelops me. A bit of sadness too, for letting a lack of mindfulness and a thin pane of glass separate me from all these blessings. The sadness doesn’t last. How could it, when surrounded by so many miracles?

With Love,
Russ

Getting Published

After reaching my goal of writing and publishing seven books last year, this year I’m focused on helping many other writers get their creations published. To that end, three of my current creative projects involve collecting the work of many of my favorite writers and poets and compiling anthologies of their work.

About six weeks ago I mentioned in a post on this blog that I was collecting short stories for an anthology of fiction short stories and another for non-fiction short stories. Those projects are going well. I hope to have collected all or most of the stories for both of them by the end of next month and to publish them soon thereafter.

The working titles for these projects are:

Palpable Imaginings (Fiction)

Slices of Life (Non-Fiction)

I decided earlier today to create a similar project to help poets get their work published. Details can be found on my blog called A Grateful Man’s Poetry at http://AGratefulMansPoetry.com

Heart-Whispers is the working title for the poetry collection.

If you are a writer of short stories and/or poetry and would like to have your creations considered for these projects, I’d love to hear from you as soon as possible. Please contact me at russtowne@yahoo.com.

Thank you!

With Love,
Russ

Gifts

Yesterday I saw a lone Canada goose in the middle of the day, honking non-stop as it flew across the sky. Seeing geese fly is one of my favorite sights and normally brings a smile to my face. Not this time. It saddened me. I believe most geese mate for life. This one seemed so lonely as it called out for companionship. I felt for that bird, as I have experienced such times.

A few minutes ago, a pair of geese flew low over me, honking away. It may have just been my imagination, but their honks seemed happier to me than the sound I heard the day before. I have no way of knowing as to whether one of them was the lone goose from yesterday, but I like to think it is.

Perhaps they flew over me today to let me know they had found each other and to share the joy in their hearts.

All I know for sure is that my day is a little brighter, my heart little warmer, my smile a little larger, and my gratitude a little greater for the gifts I was given by their presence.

Have the Homeless Become Invisible?

We are all family. May it not only be the homeless, but may the feelings in our own hearts and spirits be more visible, felt, and present in ourselves and our world.

Incredible Moment an Iranian Killer is Spared Execution by his Victim’s Mother

Wisdom. How could the mother have killed another without killing part of herself? I believe kindness is love in action, and love in action is wisdom.

Deadheading Distractions

About a month ago my rose bushes began exploding with blossoms, but most of the flowers are now well past their prime or have completely lost their petals, so I went outside to water and deadhead them. My Beloved was the one who taught me the value of deadheading many years ago. If I understand what she said correctly, plants continue to expend energy trying to keep alive flowers that are no longer viable, so if a gardener removes the dead flowers it enables the plant to focus all of its energy on productive ones, often rapidly generating a whole new wave of beautiful blossoms.

As I snipped away the old, I realized it was making way for the new, and in many ways my life is like a rose bush. I can be prickly at times, there are areas of my life that need trimming, and other areas on which I should bring greater focus.

In other words, I could deadhead various aspects of my life to get more beautiful results. No, I don’t plan to snip off various physical parts of myself, but there are certainly things that have clung to me or that I have clung to that should be deadheaded. As I begin creating the list below, I’m either mentally deadheading them or making plans to do so.

Negative thoughts about myself (snip)

Distractions that keep me from the important things in my life (snip)

Excess clutter (snip)

Excuses for not exercising more (snip)

I’m an on-going project, and as with flowers, deadheading is not a one-time endeavor, but the more I do it with my rose bushes and myself, the better I like the view.

Secrets and Truth

A kind reader recently said–likely with tongue firmly in cheek–that my secrets are safe with her. Joke or not, I appreciated her comment and am grateful for such friends.

In actuality, I don’t fear my “secrets” being exposed because I attempt to live my life in such a way that my actions on my worst day wouldn’t be worth the breath it would take to gossip about me, and I tend to share my “secrets” with the world. Heck, I’ve written whole books which contain all kinds of embarrassing and often humorous things about myself. Well, they were humorous to me afterwards.

When I make a mistake or feel that I’m out of integrity on something, I tend to immediately tell my loved ones so they hear it straight from me. I’ve found it wise to cut out the middleman/gossip in such situations.

For those reasons, people rarely appear to bother to gossip about me, those who hear gossip about me already know the truth and are able to immediately correct any possible inaccuracies, my loved ones won’t be hurt by a secret about me being revealed, and I never have to fear the truth.

Amazing Things

I would never bet against anyone with high integrity, laser-focused purpose, and indomitable spirit. To me, it would be a sucker’s bet, as life proves to me over and over again the amazing achievements otherwise ordinary people accomplish with these attributes.

A Wish For You

I’m sometimes such a slow learner in life that the lessons I’m here to be taught must be given to me over and over again. As a result they can be bitter and harsh.

May you be so loving and wise that life’s lessons need only be sweet and gentle reminders.

The Hunger

I often have a hunger that engulfs me at the most inopportune times. It fills me with a need far greater than mere desire and can only be sated when I stop doing all else to focus exclusively on putting to words feelings and ideas gushing from the depths of my spirit, and offer them with love to the world.
