Winnie The Pooh Is Calling For You!

I just read a Good Tribe Facebook post that they appear to have found at youjustlearned.com that brought a smile to my face.

It said that Jim Cummings, the voice of Winnie the Pooh, calls sick children who are in the hospital and talks to them in character.

I’d love to the looks on the faces of the young children who hear: “Winnie the Pooh is calling for YOU!”

Isn’t that cool?! I wish I could do that for sick children.

I used to make up songs on the fly for, and about, my kids. They were usually funny or silly. My Beloved still talks about how she marveled at my ability to do that. It was fun for all of us.

It just occurred to me that since I can’t be a children star’s voice, perhaps I can make sick children the star by writing uplifting personalized songs for long-term hospitalized kids. I’ll bet I could find someone to volunteer to do a guitar vocalist recording of the songs. That way, the chldren and their parents could play their song and help keep everyone’s spirits up especially when the news is bad or they are feeling down.

If you know a relatively young child who has a long-term life-threatening illness and spends most of their days in the hospital or in bed, please email me at russtowne@yahoo.com. If their parent(s) approve, I could create a personalized song for them from information such as such as their first name, age, their favorite toys, hobbies, TV shows or movies, the color of their hair, what they are having to deal with, nicknames, etc–basically things that you and/or their parents would feel comfortable having me attempt to incorporate into a song for their child.

I’d love to try an experiment or three to see if the end result is helpful to that child and their family. If it is, I’d like to do more of them. I may have to limit the number I do per quarter if I have to pay for the vocalist or the recording, but this would be my gift to the child and they’re family.

My First Songwriting Contract!

Remember when I mentioned that my song co-written with Denis Loiseau “No More Secrets/No More Lies” was recently picked up by a couple of music industry execs?

Last night I received and today I agreed to a contract from one of those execs in Hollywood giving him the right to pitch it to a music-based TV show and outlining what percentages of the license fee each party would receive if the show uses the song. Please note the word “IF” in my last sentence. Small word, big impact.

Each step is a long-shot and there are more steps to go, but it is an important next step and I am excited.

I appreciate all of you who take the time to listen to my songs. That means a LOT to me because a song is dead until listeners bring it to life.

Endeavor

I just saw the space shuttle Endeavor being flown over Silicon Valley headed south from what used to be called Moffett Field. It was a great moment for me. I remember the beautiful posters my then-young boys had hanging in their bedrooms of the brand-new space shuttle, our family visit to Cape Canaveral, and my son’s visit to Space Camp. I still remember what it felt like to be in the zero-gravity simulation chair and the space shuttle mock-up they got to explore. Awe-inspiring.

And I remember where I was and the shock and the feeling in the pit of my stomach when I learned of both shuttle disasters. How tragic and surreal it felt. One moment the shuttles and their crews were soaring in all their magnificence, and the next they were gone.

Now, to see the final chapter so many years later with my grown daughter was a special event for me.

I Flew Like Superman and Crashed Like Wyle E. Coyote

When I was 16 I worked at a restaurant. After a large wedding reception, a man gave a nearly full case of Champagne to the restaurant staff as a tip. We were all 16-18. Amazingly, I was able to ride, wobble, and veer my bicycle home afterwards, but as I attempted to turn my bicycle into our approximately 20-foot wide driveway, I missed, hitting the curb next to it instead. I flew like Superman and crashed like Wyle E. Coyote head-first skidding along our dew-soaked front lawn.

And people ask me why I don’t want to go back and visit my high school days. Once was more than enough for me…

Pig Saves Baby Goat From Drowning

I love when I see animals of different species rescue and support each other. If they can do it, it seems as though humans of different races, cultures, and religions, could do more of it. Below is a link to a clip of a goat rescuing a kid.

An Infinite Succession of Presents

(Originally posted on March 30, 2012)

“To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness.

“What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places — and there are so many — where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction.

“And if we do act, in however small a way, we don’t have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory.”

– Howard Zinn

The above came from Wisdom Quotes. It encapsulates much of what I believe and I wanted to share it with you.

Matt’s legs may have issues, but his heart and spirit are huge. Thank you Andrea for sharing this inspiring post.

Andrea Smyth's avatarThe Hand-Written Life

Matt Woodrum is an 11 year old boy with Cerebral Palsy.  Although he was given the option to sit out during his school’s Field Day, he chose to compete in the 400-meter race.  Despite his disability he completed the two laps around the track in under 5 minutes, and in the process inspired not just his classmates, but everyone else who has been touched by his story.

As Matt tires partway through, his gym teacher joins his side to encourage the 5th grader to continue.  Inspired by his strength, fellow classmates begin to jog behind him with cheers – even abandoning their own activities to be there with him as he crosses the finish line. The best part of the entire thing?  No one knew it was being filmed, besides the boy’s mom who was behind the camera!

Stories like this warm my heart – children can be wonderful reminders…
