Town Rallies Around Girl Pranked For Homecoming

A cruel hoax nearly drove a girl to suicide, but her life was saved when her town rallied around her. When bullies at her her high school voted her onto the Homecoming elite (I forget the word used in the article), and the girl learned it was only a cruel hoax to make fun of her she went from feeling elated to being devastated.

When her mother learned what had happened and informed the town and, several busineses in West Branch, MI banded together to provide a beautiful gown, beauty makeover, and more, all at no cost. They also displayed anti-bullying messages in their display windows.

One of the quotes in the article said it was like the movie “Carrie” but with a happy ending.

Way to go, West Branch, Michigan, for using kindness and visibility to diminish the scourge of bullying in your town!

Climbing The Mountain

“In this life we are all just walking up the mountain and we can sing as we climb or we can complain about our sore feet. Whichever we choose, we still gotta do the hike. I decided a long time ago singing made a lot more sense.”
–Unknown

This pretty much sums up my philosophy too. Not only about attitude, but that there are various ways to reach the top of the mountain and who am I to say that my way is better than anyone else’s?

Friends Reunited After A Train Rides Into Space

A father sent his 4-year-old son’s toy train Stanley into space and filmed the entire adventure. The smile on his son’s face when he is reunited with Stanley is precious.

What Matters To Me

This post is dedicated to anyone who is in the midst of struggle, heartache, pain, and grief. Dark days of any kind. And especially to those who are searching for their gifts, for the meaning of life, or even the reasonn they are alive.

I apologize in advance if this–or any of my posts–comes across as preachy. I’m just a student of life–and a slow-learner at that–so I’m probably just about the last person on the planet who should be preaching to anyone about anything.

Anyway, you’ve been warned, so here goes:

I probably don’t know what your gifts are, my friend, but this I do know: You have some wonderful gifts to share with the world. Gifts that it badly needs. If you haven’t discovered them yet, I hope that you keep looking until you do, and when you find them, I know that you and the world will be better for it as you share them.

I can give clues to you as to where to look: The sources of your greatest pain, trauma, or sadness are often also the catalysts of one’s greatest gifts for the world.

I know that life can be hard. That is easy to say. It is especially easy to say for those who haven’t yet dealt with many hardships.

You won’t have to dig very deep into this blog to learn that my father left my mother with 3 young children and one still in the womb when I was the oldest child and only 4-1/2 years old, that I nearly died of Whooping Cough as a young child, had many lung collapses and endured two lung surgeries in my teens, got dumped by a fiance’, nearly lost my daughter to an incurable disease, suffered some business failures including one that drove me to personal bankruptcy and erased the financial resources of a lifetime of hard work, and most recently my Beloved had thyroid cancer.

I share these things so you’ll know that I haven’t been immune to dark days and that when I say that I know life can be hard, I have some idea about life not always being full of sunshine and fair winds.

But I also mention all that so I can say this: So what? Big deal. Virtually everyone has similar stories of hardship, pain, trauma, and heart-ache.

I believe that I am a better person for having experienced each of those very unpleasant things. I wouldn’t wish them on anyone, but they happened. I can’t change that. I can focus on what lessons I can learn from each and can have empathy for others who are going through their own tough times.

It isn’t the stories that matter. Not mine, and not yours.

What matters to me is what I choose to do with the miracle of each new day of life. I can choose to make the most of it and enjoy and share all I can of the many blessings each day offers; or I can dwell on those sad stories and how unfair, cruel, and ugly people and life can be; or I can even squander each precious day worrying about a future that may or may not even happen, living for a tomorrow that never comes.

Like everything else in life, the choices are mine. I won’t always be able to choose what happens to me and to those I love, but I WILL always be able to choose how I react to what happens, and what I do about it.

And with those choices comes an amazing life-transforming power.

To make my life and my world better.

Or not.

May I choose wisely.

For Those Who Could Use A Smile Or A Laugh

Doctor: “You’re in great shape for your age, but I’m not a magician – I can’t make you any younger.”

Elderly Patient: “Who asked you to make me younger? Just make sure I get older!”

A Candle In Their Darkness

If there are people in your life who come to you only when they need you, perhaps it is because they view you as a candle when there is darkness.

Those Who Really Belong In Your Life Will Come To You And Stay

You Are A Star

I mentioned yesterday that I planned to find a few young children who have life-threatening long-term illnesses and are bed-ridden or hospitalized for extended periods and create (hopefully) uplifting and inspiring personalized songs for them that they and their parents can play.

The project now has a name (though if I find it has already been taken by another organization then I’ll create a new one): You Are A Star.

I’ve begun the process of identifying children and their parents, as well as vocalist/musicians and recording/studio producers who will (hopefully) volunteer their time to bring the lyrics I write to life for the children and their families.

“Unfinished Business”

I believe that you are in for a special treat with this post. Awhile back I had a conversation with Denis Loiseau my co-writer of most of my completed songs. In fact, if you don’t like my songs he is the one to blame because it was he who got me into songwriting so of course it’s ALL his fault! ;-D!

As a co-writer with about ten years of experience at the time, Denis generously offered to try an experimental co-write with songrwriting newbie me. My first song and our first song together was “What Kind Of Man Does That”. Since that beginning about two and a half years ago we’ve co-written 6 songs together, and are about to begin working on a seventh. Every step of the way, Denis has patiently and generously shared his songwriting knowledge, experience, and wisdom. I am very grateful that he is in my life.

Anyway, back to the conversation I had with him and the speial treat I promised. I mentioned this blog and mentioned how absolutely wonderful you dear readers are. I told him that I believe that many of you would love to hear his other songs and offered to let him present his work via this blog. I suggested that he include a brief writeup about each song. Below is his email accepting my invitation and including one of my favoirites of his songs. I believe you’ll know why when you hear it.

Please let me know if the link doesn’t work and if you can’t cut and paste the URL into your browser. As you’ve probably noticed, links and I don’t often see eye to eye no matter how hard I try. ;-D!

Hi Russ.

Thanks for your offer to post a few my songs on your blog. I spent some time reviewing it today and enjoyed experiencing what you are are doing – a lot of love.

I thought I’d start first with “Unfinished Business,” which I co-wrote with Jeff Wessman and which I think your audience might appreciate. It explores the vulnerability and courage of a father and son facing unresolved issues from their past before it’s too late, and also the gift of love between them.

Here is a link which contains a link to an MP3, followed by the lyric: http://www.denisloiseau.com/music-54.html.

For what it’s worth, to get the true emotional impact of a song, I like to listen to it first, and wait to read the lyric until afterward. The reading tends to take most of us into our heads, diluting the stronger magic that is the song.

Thanks again for making a broader audience available to hear our work, and now broadening your scope to include other work that might speak to you. You are a generous and warm soul, and I’m looking forward to our next endeavor.

Please feel free to share any or none of my words as you see fit.

Blessings,

Denis
