“Clyde and I” Children’s Song, Story, and Possibly Book Update

I recently posted a children’s story/poem titled “Clyde and I”.

I shared it with My Beloved, some parents and grandparents of young children, and my song co-writer, and got an unexpectedly enthusiastic response from them.

My song co-writer (who has composed a bunch of children’s songs) liked it so much that he didn’t suggest any changes to my lyric. He plans to compose music for it within a week or so.

One thing I wasn’t surprised about was that the parents and grandparents said the story needs illustrations. I started looking for an illustrator and so far four have responded.

Ideally, I will pick one, and if the work they do fits the story, I may present a sample of the story and illustrations to agents and/or publishers of children’s books. I may also include the song, as I think that could make an enticing package for parents and grandparents.

As always, time will tell, but in the meantime, I’m learning a lot and having loads of fun on this adventure.

And as I’ve said before, if I’m having fun, I’ve already won.

(I like the message and sound of the last sentence, and wouldn’t be surprised if in the not-too-distant future it inspires a post and possibly other writing projects).

Love,
Russ

“Chain Reaction”

This post is an update for the “Greater Than Gold” song project.

“Greater Than Gold: My co-writer and I felt the chorus in the earlier version wasn’t quite strong enough or hook-worthy, so I re-wrote it, and changed the title/hook to Chain Reaction I also made minor changes to the last two lines of verse 2. The revised lyric is below. Kevin is now composing music for it. Hopefully I’ll be able to share the completed song with you in 7-10 days.

“Chain Reaction”

My little girl saw a homeless man
Said, “Daddy he looks hungry and thin
May I use my allowance
To buy a meal for him?
He was surprised when she reached out
With a burger and some fries
He smiled as he took her gift
With grateful tears in his eyes

(Chorus)
There is greatness in goodness
And when love is in action
Ripples of kindness
Cause a Chain Reaction

(Verse 2)
Years later I was late for lunch
As I headed toward the door
Ran right past an old woman
Who looked half-starved and poor
But when my thoughts flashed back
To what my daughter had done
I saw the look on that hungry face
And bought two meals instead of one

(Chorus)
There is greatness in goodness
And when love is in action
Ripples of kindness
Cause a Chain Reaction

Greatness In Small Things

When one realizes that the small things in life ARE great they realize they’ve had great things in their life the whole time. And who wouldn’t be grateful about that?

Possessions Can Possess Us

“Every increased possession loads us with new weariness.” –John Ruskin (Source: A.Word.A.Day / Wordsmith.org)

I am a believer that less is often indeed more. It is all too easy for me to get loaded with weariness when I have a lot of possessions. The quote above reminds me of a question I ask myself periodically:

Do I own possessions or do they own me?

There have been times in my life when I’ve had relatively few possessions, and at other times they have seemed to take over my life with increased clutter, greater taxes, decreased space, more paperwork, additional maintenance, etc.

Sometimes the latter got so bad that I made a rule to myself that for every material thing I added I needed to give away or sell something else. I used to give away whole carloads of unused items.

I now attempt to live a more frugal life with fewer material possessions but ones that I value more. To me, “Frugal” means “Not wasteful” or “Less wasteful”. I find myself happier living this way.

For example, several years ago I sold my car. I realized that since I work at home My Beloved and I very rarely need two cars. We’ve been a one-car family ever since. While it does take a little more schedule coordination, the tradeoff has been a greater sense of satisfaction, lower costs, fewer taxes, more space, greater utilization of an expensive asset, and more. We have a car rental place within walking distance and across the street from our mechanic so even on those rare occasions when our car is in the shop we just rent a car for the day. It is still much cheaper than owning two cars.

I’ve even often found that when I’m feeling down, if I take a little time to de-clutter an aspect of my life–something as simple as cleaning off my desk or better organizing one of our garages–often makes me feel a lot better.

Love,
Russ

Bathroom Humor (It’s Not What You May Be Thinking)

The first photo is a restroom/toilet room on the 10th floor of a building and the floor is painted to look floor-less.

The mirrored facility with the woman holding the door is the same restroom/toilet room that is completely transparent from the inside. I have to say that even if I new for certain that no one could see it, I'd probably feel exposed using it.

Happenings

“Love is not a matter of what happens in life. It’s a matter of what’s happening in your heart.” –Ken Keyes

I also believe that happiness is not a matter of what happens in your life. It’s a matter of what’s happening in your heart.

“It’s not happening TO me, it’s happening FOR me.” –Unknown

I believe it is often wise to view life’s experiences–especially those that feel negative at the time–and “setbacks” with the attitude that there is a lesson to be learned and that is a gift from life to us, but I also believe that not everything necessarily is worth the price paid.

For example, sometimes the death of a beloved child or spouse seems to be nothing but terrible, or that the tragedy and depth of the pain greatly outweigh the lessons to be learned.

Perhaps I have just not come far enough spiritually to better understand such things.

Maybe I never will.

Russ

Project Updates & Requests for Info

As you probably know I wrote my first short children’s story titled “Clyde and I” (you can see it at a recent post of the same title) for my grandkids. I’m considering writing more, and possibly creating one or more books for children of bedtime-reading or early-read-on-your-own ages. This is a completely new endeavor for me and I’d appreciate input from parents or grandparents of children of that age, or whose children recently were of that age, or author’s of children’s books, or know someone who is any of those things, and I’d love to hear from you.

I’d also be happy to send the currently UN-illustrated short story/poem to you for your review and hopefully comments.

Speaking of book illustrations, I’m beginning to explore the idea of working with one or more illustrators on one or more young children’s book projects. If you or someone you know are might be interested in discussing such projects, please email me. I seek illustrators who can create whacky-looking colorful characters.

If I decide to create a children’s book, I may include a read-along/sing-along song with it with lyrics that follow the story.

In other news, two more non-children songs are about 1-2 weeks away from completion. Two of my more recent songs (“Nature’s Symphony” and “My Old Friend”) are being played on Spotify, Muve Music, and X-Box (Songs/Music?). Some of the earlier ones have more recently been sent out and may also have begun to be played by now, but I haven’t seen payments for them yet, so I don’t know whether they’re being played yet or not.

Love,
Russ

Whispered Wisdom

It is most often when in silence that I can hear the whispered wisdom of my spirit.

Clyde and I

OK, this post is going to take some explaining first. In a recent reply to a comment made by fellow blogger and friend Diana S providing an update on the song that she and her daughter’s generosity inspired, I joked something to the effect that sometimes such projects take on a life of their own. Attempting to be witty (I usually end up being about half-witty) I thought of the silliest mental image I could think of on very short notice and added something along the lines of “And and who knows, before it’s done, it might morph into a song about a green giraffe named Clyde who is standing on his head eating a banana in the rain.”

That’s when the trouble started…

That phrase stuck in my head and wouldn’t leave. I knew I wasn’t going to get any sleep until I’d dealt with it. It became a challenge. Fortunately–or unfortunately (you’ll get to decide after reading it)–I’ve wanted to attempt to write a children’s poem or story that I could read to my grandkids as they got a bit older. So, I decided to use that phrase to see what I could come up with and promised myself that I would use every part of the silly phrase “a green giraffe named Clyde who is standing on his head eating a banana in the rain.”

Below is my first attempt in 25 or 30 years to write a children’s story.

OK, I’ve stalled as long as I can, so ready or not, here it comes.

Clyde and I
I went to say “hi” to new neighbors next door
And saw something I’d never seen before
When I say what I saw please don’t laugh
Because what I saw was a green giraffe!
He was standing on his head out in the rain
And the poor wet guy seemed in a lot of pain
His body swayed way up high
And his feet were stuck straight up in the sky!
I just stood there not knowing what to do
As he ate a banana that was bright blue!
I’ve seen yellow bananas, and green ones too,
Even brown and black ones, but never blue!
When I offered my umbrella
To that very soaked fella
He said, “Hi, my name is Clyde.”
Then looked at me with sad, sad, eyes
And with a sigh he said, “Silly me.
“I tried to untie a knot in a tree.
“Now what a pain in the neck I’ve got.
“When I bend it wrong it hurts a LOT.
“So I’m standing on my head to work out the kinks
“He explained between rain-drop blinks
“And I’m eating this banana to keep up my strength
“It takes a lot of muscles for a neck this length”
Then he thought for a while
And on his face grew a great big smile
“Would you please use my neck for a slide?
You’ll help my sore neck muscles if you take a ride
And I’ll bet that if you do
It will be a lot of fun for you.”
I knew right then we’d become good friends!
The End
–Russ Towne
