I have no idea how he knows when I need him.
We can go weeks without speaking,
and then, when my blue moods threaten to turn black,
he will show up and tell me my moods are:
azure,
indigo,
cerulean,
cobalt,
periwinkle–
and suddenly the blue will not seem so dark,
more like the color of a noon-bright sky.
He brings the sun.

Notes:

The dynamic of friendship is almost always underestimated as a constant force in human life: a diminishing circle of friends is the first terrible diagnostic of a life in deep trouble: of overwork, of too much emphasis on a professional identity, of forgetting who will be there when our armored personalities run into the inevitable natural disasters…

Bob Hope on Aging & Everything Else

“BOB HOPE JOKES

“I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor’s permission to join a fitness club and start exercising. I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for a whole hour. But, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over.”

On milestones:

ON TURNING 70: “You still chase women, but only downhill.”

ON TURNING 80: “That’s the time of your life when even your birthday suit needs pressing.”

ON TURNING 90: “You know you’re getting old when the candles cost more than the cake.”

On TURNING 100: “I don’t feel old. In fact, I don’t feel anything until noon. Then it’s time for my nap!”

ON GIVING UP HIS EARLY CAREER, BOXING: “I ruined my hands in the ring. The referee kept stepping on them.”

ON NEVER WINNING AN OSCAR: “Welcome to the Academy Awards or as it’s called at my home, Passover.”

ON GOLF: “Golf is my profession. Show business is just to pay the green fees.”

ON WHY HE CHOSE SHOWBIZ FOR HIS CAREER: “When I was born, the doctor said to my mother, Congratulations, you have an eight-pound ham.”

ON RECEIVING THE CONGRESSIONAL GOLD MEDAL: “I feel very humble, but I think I have the strength of character to fight it.”

ON HIS FAMILY’S EARLY POVERTY: “Four of us slept in the one bed. When it got cold, mother threw on another brother.”

ON HIS SIX BROTHERS: “That’s how I learned to dance. Waiting for the bathroom.”

ON HIS EARLY FAILURES: “I would not have had anything to eat if it wasn’t for the stuff the audience threw at me.”

Failure and Well-Lived Lives

I believe the failures never stop for lives well-lived. Failing mightily is part of the package when one attempts to do mighty things. It is what a person does and keeps doing after they fail again and again, and who they blame each time, that shows the mettle of a person. While their hearts still beat there is no final finish line for those who refuse to give up,  to relinquish their unrealized dreams, and who view each moment and each new dawn as an opportunity to begin again.

Russ

My Muse Has a Wicked Sense of Humor

My muse has an incredible sense of timing and wicked sense of humor. She thinks it’s hilarious to wait until the middle of the night and then wake me up with story ideas and dreams that could be turned into stories.

At about 4 AM last night I was once again awakened by a flood of ideas, and not just one story idea this time but three. (By the way, I’m NOT complaining.  While it can be downright inconvenient at the time, I can find other times to sleep–especially on the weekends–but stories only come when they want to and most often while I’m sleeping, so I’ve learned it’s far better to lose a little sleep than to lose story ideas!)

My muse has now planted four story ideas in my brain in the last two nights. I hope to make the most of them before the first of April. (Dang, that’s only three days away!) Then I’ll be focused on other things for three or four weeks.

Our son Brian and daughter-in-law Kristi are bringing our nearly two year old twin grandsons to visit for about ten days (WAHOOOO!), and April 1st is the beginning of a new quarter. As a self-employed wealth manager, I only get paid once per quarter, and only after I’ve written and sent letters regarding Clients’ portfolios to them. The personalized results portions of each letter can’t be started until the end of the prior quarter, in this case March 31st. It is a high priority for me to get those letters out, a task that typically takes me two to four weeks.

So my window of writing availability is closing at just the moment the floodgates of story ideas have opened (after a 100-day story idea drought!). As I said, my muse has an incredible sense of timing and wicked sense of humor.

By the way, if you are a recent reader or follower of this blog, you may be unaware of my site for sharing my fiction and flash fiction stories, and my journey in creating them. If that sounds interesting to you, I recommend you check out Imaginings of a Grateful Man at:

RTHi, my name is Russ Towne and I’m honored that The Story Reading Ape is sharing this information with you.

My hope is that readers will experience truth and kindness in my writing, and that it will remind them of the greatness within themselves and others.

I believe in doing what I love and in listening the whispers of my heart.

I didn’t think I had a creative bone in my body until I was in my fifties. Then an email from a friend changed my life. Denis Loiseau, an accomplished songwriter, sent one of his latest creations to me and asked what I thought of it. I replied with the areas I thought were great just as they were, and mentioned some parts I believed could use further work. He agreed with my assessments and invited me to co-write a song with him.

Despite my serious doubts that I’d…
