“Bugs Bunny Saved My Life’

A friend recently forwarded a post from Dan Lewis’ “Now I Know (That’s Half the Battle!)” that discussed Mel Blanc. I had already known that Mel had been the voice of many cartoon characters including Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, and Barney Rubble, but I learned a fascinating thing about Mel Blanc that I’d never known before:

Bugs Bunny saved Mel Blanc’s life! Below is a snippet from the article.

“In 1961, Bugs would save Blanc’s life. On January 24th of that year, Blanc was in a head-on car crash which caused his skull to fracture in three places, fractured both his legs and his pelvis, and sent him into a coma. After roughly two weeks of trying to get Blanc to communicate, doctors were finding little success. A doctor took an unconventional approach, for reasons unknown, and asked the incapacitated Blanc, “How are you today, Bugs Bunny?” Blanc replied — using Bugs’ voice. He’d recover from the coma a week or so later as doctors were able to communicate with him, using Bugs Bunny as a bridge to Blanc’s consciousness. In his autobiography, Blanc credits the breakthrough — and Bugs Bunny specifically — for bringing him out of the coma.”

I find that story amazing and wonderful. By the way, I also learned that on Mel Blanc’s tombstone it reads (at his request): “That’s All Folks!”

You might want to check out Dan Lewis’ site for more fascinating information on a wide variety of topics.

Life Is A Mirror

“Life is a mirror and will reflect to the thinker what he thinks into it.” -Ernest Holmes

I also believe that life is a magnifier and will magnify good and ill deeds out into the world and back onto the doer. I’m not suggesting that life is fair–I’ve seen too many examples where it isn’t where wonderful and often young people or even children are stricken with terribly painful, debillitating, and/or life-ending diseases–but I still believe in karma and that good deeds tend to create a better world, and bad deeds tend to have the opposite effect, so it makes sense to me to choose kindness, compassion, love, empathy, and gratitude over actions that harm or ignore the needs of others.

Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive.
Find a way to be thankful for your troubles
and they can become your blessings.

BE THANKFUL

Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire,
If you did, what would there be to look forward to?

Be thankful when you don’t know something
For it gives you the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for the difficult times.
During those times you grow.

Be thankful for your limitations
Because they give you opportunities for improvement.

Be thankful for each new challenge
Because it will build your strength and character.

Be thankful for your mistakes
They will teach you valuable lessons.

Be thankful when you’re tired and weary
Because it means you’ve made a difference.

It is easy to be thankful for the good things.
A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are
also thankful for the setbacks.

Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive.
Find a way to be thankful for your troubles
and they can become your blessings.

Without Him, I’m Only Another Human

A friend sent the following to me because he knows how I much love dogs:

Observations About Man’s Best Friend

No matter how little money and how few possessions you own,
having a dog makes you rich.
— Louis Sabin

To err is human; to forgive, canine.
— Unknown

Money will buy you a pretty good dog, but it won’t buy the
wag of his tail.
— Henry Wheeler Shaw

You can say any fool thing to a dog, and the dog will give
you this look that says, “My God, you’re RIGHT! I never
would’ve thought of that!”
— Dave Barry

If your dog doesn’t like someone, you probably shouldn’t
either.
— Unknown

Old dogs, like old shoes, are comfortable. They might be a
bit out of shape and a little worn around the edges, but
they fit well.
— Bonnie Wilcox

The more people I meet, the more I like my dog.
— Unknown

In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn’t merely train him
to be semi-human. The point is to open oneself to the
possibility of becoming partly a dog.
— Edward Hoagland

Dogs are our link to paradise. They don’t know evil or
jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a
glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing
nothing was not boring — it was peace.
— Milan Kundera

When you feel dog tired at night, it may be because you’ve
growled all day long.
— Unknown

A really companionable dog is an accident of nature. You
can’t get it by breeding for it, and you can’t buy it with
money. It just happens along.
— E B White

I think we are drawn to dogs because they are the
uninhibited creatures we might be if we weren’t certain we
knew better.
— George Bird Evans

Even the tiniest Poodle or Chihuahua is still a wolf at
heart.
— Dorothy Hinshaw

I’ve seen a look in dogs’ eyes, a quickly vanishing look of
amazed contempt, and I am convinced that basically dogs
think humans are nuts.
— John Steinbeck

You may have a dog that won’t sit up, roll over or even cook
breakfast, not because she’s too stupid to learn how but
because she’s too smart to bother.
— Rick Horowitz

My husband and I are either going to buy a dog or have a
child. We can’t decide whether to ruin our carpets or ruin
our lives.
— Rita Rudner

When I am wrong, he is delighted to forgive.
When I am angry, he clowns to make me smile.
When I am happy, he is joy unbounded.
When I am a fool, he ignores it.
When I succeed, he brags.
Without him, I am only another human.
With him, I am all powerful.
I know a secret comfort and a private peace.
He has brought me understanding where I was ignorant.
His head on my knee can heal my human hurts.
His presence is protection against dark and unknown things.
He has promised to wait for me in case I need him.
And I expect I will, as I always have.
— Gene Hill

A Quiet and Humble Hero is Gone

I just read an article about a man whom I remember reading about in 1976. Ed Ray was a quiet humble man who did what needed to be done when it needed to be done and in the process probably saved the lives of a bus full of children who had been buried alive. He just passed on at the age of 91. Thank you for saving all of those children, Mr. Ray. That is quite a legacy you have left.

Here are some snippets and a URL or link to an article recounting those terrifying hours and the role he played in saving them all:

The nation called Ed Ray a hero when he led a terrified group of children to safety after they were kidnapped aboard their school bus and held underground for ransom in the summer of 1976.

But the unassuming bus driver from a dusty farm town in Central California never saw himself that way, even after news of the infamous Chowchilla kidnapping grabbed headlines and inspired a TV movie.

As for the 26 children he saved, Ray became their lifelong friend until he died Thursday at 91 from complications of cirrhosis of the liver.

“I remember him making me feel safe,” said Jodi Medrano, who was 10 when three men hijacked the school bus and stashed the group in a hot, stuffy storage van in a rock quarry.

Medrano held a flashlight as the bus driver worked with older students to stack mattresses, force an opening and remove the dirt covering the van so they could escape after 16 hours underground. She never left Ray’s side during the ordeal.

“I remember he actually got onto me because I swore,” said Medrano, now 46. “Mr. Ray said, ‘you knock that off.’ I thought, whenever we get home I will be in so much trouble. That’s when I knew I was going home, because he made me have that hope.”

“Mr. Ray was a very quiet, strong, humble man. He has a very special place in my heart and I loved him very much,” Medrano said, crying.

The kidnappers sealed the children and Ray inside the storage van and covered it with 3 feet of dirt as part of their plan to demand $5 million ransom.

“He told me that he felt it was his responsibility to get the kids back home to their parents safely, that’s all he could think about,” Ray’s son, Glen Ray, said. His father loved kids and they were his life, the son said.

Ray, who grew corn and alfalfa and raised dairy cows, never boasted about his role in the rescue, his granddaughter Robyn Gomes said.

“The community will remember him as a hero, but it’s not at all how he saw himself,” she said. “He was a remarkable man. If you met him, you loved him. He was that kind of guy.”

The World is Full Of Magic Things Indeed

“The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.”

— W.B. Yeats

I don’t think I’ve ever seen this quote, but I like it. The world is full of magic things indeed. A walk in nature with all of our senses fully open and aware can be a truly spiritual and awe-inspiring re-awakaning.

Even better to do so with a young child for which everything is new and magical. I look forward to walking with my grandson in a redwood grove, along a forest trail near a stream, on the beach near the ocean, and so many more magical places. And camping under the stars. In the meantime, I’ll patiently wait for him to reach an age where we can do those things together as I add to my Grandson List (It’s like a Bucket List only better!) ;-D!

Now This Is What I Call a Blue Light SPECIAL!

When Rankin Paynter found out his local K-Mart was going out of business he bought up its entire invenotry and donated it to a local charity that helps clothe and supply the needy in his community. He could have doubled his money by selling it but instead chose to give it away.

He runs a successful jewelry exchange but remembers growing up poor. He said, “Just because they (people) are in need doesn’t make them bad people. I live in a small town. I know these people. They are good. If I can help them I do.” (I may not have quoted him exactly but got the gist of his comments.)

Changing the World (Part II)

“I alone cannot change the World, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” – Mother Teresa

She did indeed. And those ripples are likely to be felt for many generations. That’s quite a legacy.
