Changing the World

“Never doubt that a small group of people can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.” – Maragret Mead

There is power and wisdom in these words. And hope for the few to be able to positively effect the many.

Courage, Love, Peace, Inspiration, and Talent

I’d seen this before but it touched me just as powerfully the second time around. Courage, love, and peace indeed! And talent.

If you’re still not sure about any of them …this ought to do it.

The Song In My Heart

“A friend knows the song in my heart and sings it to me when my memory fails.” -Donna Roberts

A buddy posted this quote on FB and I like it. Thought you might too.

Abundance: Unconventional Education

A friend sent an article today that outlined a series of experiments regarding educating students the results of which I found most remarkable. I believe you will too. It was posted on DelanceyPlace.com. The article is dated 5/15/12. Here’s the URL.

Smile! You Are Great! You’re Amazing!

I just finished watching a video called “Validation”. It’s longer than a typical YouTube vid, but I found it interesting, fun, and ultimately heart-warming. I recommend taking the time to watch all of it.

I highly recommend following the link to the YouTube video. What an amazing young man and mind-set. I just discovered Jolyn’s blog but based on this one post I like what I see and plan to explore it further.

“To Have a Simple, Honest, Honorable, Life”

I love to read stories about people who overcome adversities. They inspire me. Below are snippets and a URL about one such man. I believe you’ll find his story remarkable and inspiring too.

NEW YORK (AP) — For years, Gac Filipaj mopped floors, cleaned toilets and took out trash at Columbia University.

A refugee from war-torn Yugoslavia, he eked out a living working for the Ivy League school. But Sunday was payback time: The 52-year-old janitor donned a cap and gown to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in classics.

As a Columbia employee, he didn’t have to pay for the classes he took. His favorite subject was the Roman philosopher and statesman Seneca, the janitor said during a break from his work at Lerner Hall, the student union building he cleans.

“I love Seneca’s letters because they’re written in the spirit in which I was educated in my family — not to look for fame and fortune, but to have a simple, honest, honorable life,” he said.

“He is immensely humble and grateful, but he’s one individual who makes his own future.”

For Filipaj, the degree comes after years of studying late into the night in his Bronx apartment, where he’d open his books after a 2:30-11 p.m. shift as a “heavy cleaner” — his job title. Before exam time or to finish a paper, he’d pull all-nighters, then go to class in the morning and then to work.

During an interview with The Associated Press in a Lerner Hall conference room, Filipaj didn’t show the slightest regret or bitterness about his tough life. Instead, he cheerfully described encounters with surprised younger students who wonder why their classmate is cleaning up after them.

“They say, ‘Aren’t you…?'” he said with a grin.

He’s not interested in furthering his studies to make more money.

“The richness is in me, in my heart and in my head, not in my pockets,” said Filipaj, who is now an American citizen.

Soon after, the feisty, 5-foot-4 janitor picked up a broom and dustpan and went back to work.

What I Learned from My Son and Dandelions

When our middle son was a young teenager, one of his chores was to mow the lawns. One day as I walked into the house after work I noticed that the front yard had dandelion stems in it that were at least 6 inches tall. On top of them were the round puff-balls that blew apart on windy days. My son had promised to mow the yard the day before, but looking at those tall dandelions it was clear to me that he hadn’t done so.

I asked him if he had mowed the lawn the day before, and if he had, whether he did a good job. He answered yes to both questions. By now, I was getting angry.

I asked him how he could possibly have mowed the yard the day before when the dandelions were so tall today? He swore to me that he had indeed mowed the yard the day before.

I was convinced that he was lying, and children who got caught doing that in our house faced substantial consequences—-often extra yard work.

My wife and I preferred to give yard work because it could be quickly completed, was not easy, and the lesson that we were trying to instill would more likely be learned and remembered.

I was about to assign a consequence to my son for lying to me, but something kept me from doing it. Perhaps it was because he didn’t tend to lie. Maybe it was the earnest look in his eyes, or that he was so adamant about his innocence. Whatever the reason, I decided on a simple way to prove the truth.

I asked him to mow the yard the again the next day just before I came home from work. Then when I got home I’d ensure the job was done well. The following day we’d both take a look at the lawn and if I didn’t see tall dandelions with the puff balls on top I’d know that he had lied to me.

I warned him that if the experiment proved that he was lying the consequence would be even worse for him than if he admitted it right then. Once again he said he was telling the truth.

After work the next day, I checked the lawn and he had indeed thoroughly mowed it. There wasn’t a dandelion puffball or tall stem in sight.

When I came home from work the following day I looked at the front yard. To my shock and amazement, there were many dandelion stems standing 6 inches tall. In just one day they had grown that high and sprouted puff balls!

There was now no doubt that he had been telling the truth. I felt shame for having accused him of lying to me. I asked him to come out to the front yard, and sincerely apologized for falsely accusing him. I added that there be no consequence to him, and that we’d do something special so that I could help make it up to him for my not trusting him when he’d given his word that he’d mowed the lawn.

My son and those dandelions taught me some important lessons that day:

I should have trusted him as I usually do.

Never underestimate either my son or nature; both can do amazing things.

Sometimes my eyes can deceive me and it is good to ask my heart for a second
opinion.

Golden Truth

“Truth, like gold, is to be obtained not by its growth, but by washing away from it all that is not gold.” -Leo Tolstoy

I saw this quote at Wordsmith.com and like the quote and the comparison. Truth, like gold, is sometimes all-too-rare and precious.

As are good friends.

My Recipe For Life

I believe that most people feel that life is very complex and complicated. That is understandable. There is so much information, regulation, conflicting needs and priorities, entities telling and selling what we need and should do, partisanship and rancor, choices, stresses, demands on our time attention and loyalties, and conflicting deadlines that humankind has to deal with every day make it very easy to become completely overwhelmed.

But I’ve found that by identifying the relatively few things that are most important–that truly matter–to me, and investing nearly all of my time, energy, attention, love, and passion on them, that most of those far less important distractions gradually fade away.

And as they do, I’ve found much greater contentment, happiness, fulfillment, confidence, and inner peace.

I’m incredibly fortunate to be able to spend nearly all day every day doing what I truly love to do.

They include investing time with family and friends, having a very flexible schedule so that I’m nearly always available when loved ones need or want to be with me, and doing what I love and what inspires me both professionally and with my hobbies.

That doesn’t mean that I have life by the tail or that I or my life are perfect. Far from it. I’m a slow learner in the school of life and have many more mistakes to make and lessons to learn.

I’m incredibly blessed to be surrounded by people who patiently tolerate my many imperfections and love me in spite of–or sometimes perhaps even because of–them. They coach, guide, comfort, cajole, teach, and support me. But most important of all, they love me.

With such people, even a slow learner like me can shine!
