Adversity and Me

I can choose to let adversity
Weaken or strengthen me
The choice is mine
Every time

Braces

(A repost for newer readers to this site.)

Sometimes it is really tough to be a kid. When both of our boys needed braces we knew they were in for a rough time. In those days braces tended to be made out of highly visible shiny metal, and painful. We also knew that some kids would make fun of their “railroad tracks” and that could be hard on their self-esteem.

From the perspective of our sons, there was yet another big negative. The dentist gave to them a long list of chewy, gooey, wonderful things that they could not eat for the entire time they had to wear the braces, and they were warned that if they did eat the banned items they could cause permanent damage to their teeth and expensive damage to their braces.

The looks on their faces fell and stayed that way as the time for braces neared.

It hurt my beloved wife and me to see them so sad, so we discussed the situation. We agreed that there wasn’t much we could do about the emotional and physical pain, nor the taunting that they were likely to get at school, beyond our being open to discussing such things at whatever level the boys might feel comfortable doing so. We didn’t want to “baby” them, and we wanted to support them in a healthy way. We were also concerned that they might have a very hard time refraining from all of the goodies that were on the dentist’s banned list, so we came up with an idea that we thought might at least remove some of the sting of getting braces.

A week or two before they were scheduled to get their braces, Beloved and I sat them down and said we knew it would be tough to keep from eating all the things that were on the banned list for the whole time they wore their braces, so were were willing to make a deal with them.

We’d take them to the grocery store and let them each cram as many of their favorite items from the banned list as they could into their own large lunch bag, and then we’d let them eat it all.

We told them that we expected four things in return, that they’d:

Continue to eat 3 healthy meals per day
Thoroughly brush their teeth a minimum of 3 times every day
Finish eating everything in the bag or hand over any that they hadn’t eaten before the braces were put on
They wouldn’t eat any of the items on the banned list for the whole time their braces were on.

Their faces lit up as they enthuiastically agreed to the terms of our agreement, so we jumped into the car and went to the grocery store with their two empty bags.

Talk about kids in a candy store! They quickly and enthusiasticy filled their bags with with all kinds of wonderful stuff, carefully using every millimeter of space as they scienticically jammed more of their treasure into their bulging bags.

When we got home they were thrilled with all of their treasures and began to enjoy their bounty. They were so happy that I think they even completely forgot about the braces for awhile.

We ensured that they had healthy meals and brushed their teeth often, but otherwise left them to their goodies.

As we’d hoped, by the time their braces went on the boys were so sick of all that junk that quite a long time elapsed before they even wanted to begin to think about eating anything on the banned list again!

Breaking Free

My heart aches when I see
Tortured souls in society
They toil, fret, and scheme
To chase someone else’s dream
So desperate in their quest
For material success
They jump through hoops
In all the right ways
To find only heartache
At the end of their days
Put too much faith
In physical things
Unaware of the regrets
That approach brings
Seeking approval from without
Is not what success is all about
It is when I came to see
How much happier I could be
Doing all the things that I love
Not just a job I was tired of
And true success became a fact
When those I loved
Loved me back

Regaining One’s Voice Via Technology

A year or two ago My Beloved had thyroid cancer and went through surgery, radiation treatments, etc.

Vocal chords surround the thyroid and there is always a risk that when the thyroid is removed that temporary or permanent damage to ones voice can occur.

In the case of My Beloved, her voice became much deeper, more like the gravelly voice of a big man. Fortunately, over the course of a year or so, her earlier voice gradually returned.

I just read that film critic Roger Ebert was not so lucky. Below is a snippet about what happened to him and how technology made a miraculous difference in his life.

In 2006, the movie critic Roger Ebert lost his voice box to thyroid cancer. But recordings of his voice were subsequently digitized and turned into all possible English sounds. He can now type words and have them said aloud—in his own voice. (Emphasis mine.)

Natural Meditation

If you could use a break and/or admire wildlife of the furry and feathered variety, I believe you’ll enjoy this short video as much as I did.

Dismiss What Insults Your Soul

A FB friend named Nancy Parris has been on quite a roll today. Here are two more sayings she posted that I really like, and her sources for same:

“Re-examine all you’ve been told.
Dismiss what insults your soul.”

Parenting Humor

I just saw this on FB. It was on a someeeusercard (I have no idea what that is, but it might be worth checking out):

“Welcome to being a parent of a teenager. Prepare for a large amount of eye rolling, emotional outbursts, and thoughts of running away. And that’s just the parents.”

The Wait

Light can be too bright
It can even hurt our eyes
And make us blind
If too much shines at one time
Perhaps truth and wisdom
Are like light’s rays
We take in what we can
But the rest must wait for later days

Where’d He Go?!?!

I’m generally not fond of pranks for a fairly long list of reasons, but I occasionally come across one that is fun, funny, and appears to do no harm. The one linked below seems to fall into that category to me. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Imagine how you might react if you were a teenager working at a fast-food joint’s drive-up window, you took an order from a customer, and when the customer’s car pulled up to the window and you went to hand their order to them, no one appears to be in the car…

A Freshly Minted Eagle Scout at Age 85

I just read a remarkable story about an 85 year old man who finally was awarded a long-overdue Eagle Scout badge. Here are snippets:

“It took a family tragedy and a world war to stop George Maher from becoming an Eagle Scout. It took a concerned co-worker, more than sixty years later, to set things right.

“The year was 1944 and George was a sixteen-year-old who had signed up to join the Navy to fight in World War II. Still, George wanted to get that Eagle Scout badge before he shipped out.

“He had completed all the necessary work, gotten all the necessary merit badges to qualify. All that was left was his board of review hearing.

“The hearing was scheduled for March 10, 1944. It started, but it never ended. George’s mother burst into the room to tell him his father was gravely ill and they had to get to the hospital immediately. He left without saying a word.

“George went on to serve his country, get married, raise a family, even volunteer for the Boy Scouts. Those who know him say he always acted like an Eagle Scout. But George knew he wasn’t.”

Until now. Congratulations, George!
