Slices of Life Update

The “Slices of Life” anthology of non-fiction short stories I’m compiling is now at about 32,551 words versus my new target of 37,500 to 40,000 words. So far, it includes 36 stories from 14 participating writers.

There’s still time for you to present stories for consideration for possible inclusion, but please send them ASAP as I don’t know how soon we’ll reach my targets.

I’m also working on another book of fiction short stories and flash fiction tentatively titled “Twists.” As the moment I’ve written all the stories in it and it is at about 17,000 words. I may soon announce that I seek fiction short stories from other writers for “Twists” or another fiction short story anthology that has not yet been named.

Gray Hair and Wrinkles

I believe that every new gray hair and wrinkle are gifts to remind me that life is fleeting, and in that impermanence, precious.

The Time I Have Left

I’m committed to making as many heart-felt memories as I can with whatever time I have left. I have a fatal disease. It’s called Mortality.

Hell to Pay

The devil may be in the details but there will be hell to pay if we don’t also see the big picture.

Blanket Forts and Grandsons

I recently got to build a blanket fort with my oldest grandson Thomas. He’s two years old. I used to love building and playing in blanket forts when I was a kid, then with my children, and now I get to do it with grandsons! It is likely to be the first of many forts, caves, castles, spaceships, and whatever else we think of with this new generation. Thankfully even an iPad or computer can’t replace some experiences for young children!

My Beloved took the photos.

I Pity the Poor Burgler

As I locked up to head for bed, the thought occurred to me that there are 6 dogs at our house tonight. That crazy number includes some we’re watching for relatives. I chuckled at what would happen to a burglar who made the mistake of hitting our house tonight. I was tempted to leave the doors unlocked, but couldn’t do it. I locked the doors to protect the poor burglars.

“Don’t Eat Mickey Mouse!”

My Beloved and I are blessed with being able to enjoy three whole days with our two-year-old grandson Thomas. We certainly made the most of it today, starting with going to breakfast with him, his Aunt Stephanie, and her boyfriend Steve. We thought we’d surprise Thomas with a pancake shaped like one of his favorite “people” in the whole wide world: Mickey Mouse. Big mistake! When “Mama” (My Beloved) started to cut it up for him, he looked at her as though she was murdering his friend! He didn’t want to eat or cut it up!

We then took him to a place called Roaring Camp Big Trees Railroad where he got to see and ride his favorite things in the world: “TRAINS!” They have over 100-year-old steam engines and they chug through ancient redwood forests. (Long-time readers know how much I like redwoods. Actually I love ancient plants of many kinds, and joke that when I’m near them I don’t look quite as old by comparison. Thomas and his “Papa” (me) were thrilled. Mama, his Aunt Stephanie and her boyfriend Steve enjoyed it too.

Thomas Towne the Towne Marshall securedownload

The train station is in a small “town”. On the way out we saw the “Towne Marshall’s Office.” Since our surname is Towne we took a photo of “Towne Marshall Thomas.”

Mama and I exercised considerable self-restraint only buying three gifts for him at their gift shop, a toy train, a train-shaped bank with a coin slot, and a wooden train whistle.

It was a delightful day. Mama and Thomas are already down for the night (or at least Mama is ’til he falls asleep.)

What if…

What if in an afterlife roles get reversed, with those who were kind being kindly treated, and those who were unkind being treated unkindly? Wait, isn’t that often what already happens in this life?

What if those who were unkind began being treated kindly?

Russ
