Today’s Quote

He is living proof of the truth in his message. Even in prison, slavery, and concentration camps there are always some who find a way to be useful, kind, and helpful. In such dire situations, a simple and pure act can save lives and provide inspiration and hope for others.

False Friends

A friend on Facebook and in life sent a note along the lines that she was impressed by the promotional activities I’d just begun.

I feel immensely grateful for her comment, and for all the wonderfully supportive and inspirational comments and actions of so many kind and generous people. I feel much joy on this adventure and it is in no small part due to all who have encouraged me. Thank you!

And, I feel sadness and Shame. I waited three years to begin doing “meet the public” promotional activities as I told myself and others that “I want to write not market.” I think it was really fear and laziness–two false friends I know too well– that had held me back, but at least this time it only took me three years to push past them instead of the 53 or so years it took me to listen to the whispers of my heart and begin to write, so that still feels like a victory of sorts to me. (I like to look for the and celebrate the wins where I can find them.)

I still wrestle with another false friend, Shame, but he too is getting easier to beat. The old negative messages that had been playing so loudly in my head for so many years have gradually diminished as so many of your voices have echoed and amplified the whispers of my heart.

My false friends Fear, Shame, and Laziness are gradually being beaten. They really have no chance at all, for on my side is the best team in the world. All of you.

As I type this, feelings of immense joy and appreciation wash over me, overflowing as  joy-filled tears that help me to see even more clearly how truly blessed I am.

Thank you.

With Love,

Russ

A Special Day

My Books &Me at teh Parenting Resources FairCloseup

Having my books featured at the Parents Resources Fair today was a special joy. I got to interact with a lot of amazing children and parents. It was a special treat seeing a child’s eyes light up when they saw all the books and then widened when they learned I’d written them. My wife Heidi helped me though all aspects of the event. Our daughter Stephanie dropped by as well as friends Sue and Cole. Oh yeah, I also sold a bunch of books. Thank you everyone!

With Love,

Russ

I’m Being Interviewed By a Reporter from Our Local Newspaper

A reporter from our local newspaper is scheduled to interview me next week about my books, what got me into writing at such a late stage in life, where the ideas for my books and stories came from, why such a large variety of genres, how I managed to write so many so quickly, etc. I look forward to the adventure and opportunity.

With Love,

Russ

Forest Ranger Granted Dying Wish to see Beloved Woods One Last Time

As someone who loves to be out in the redwoods I can relate to this man’s last wish and am touched by the kindness of all those who helped it become a reality.

Ed was an elderly man living in an assisted-living home in Washington and under hospice care.

He had not been outside for several years as a result of his illness and the difficulty in transporting him, but his last wish, which he shared with his hospice chaplain, was to go outdoors. When he was healthy, Ed had been a forest ranger and lived for being outside.

The chaplain contacted the local fire department, and soon after, Ed and several members of the fire rescue team went on an outing to Meadowdale Beach Park in Edmonds, Wash. Ed was picked up and transported in the EMS vehicle, and other members of the fire department traveled in a fire truck.

Together, the group took Ed up and down the trails, bringing him the scents of the forest by touching the trees and bringing their hands close to Ed’s face.

The Grumpadinkles Have Arrived!

The Grumpadinkles on Amazon

I’m delighted to announce the arrival of The Grumpadinkles on Amazon.com (U.S.). They’ll hopefully soon be showing up in Canada, the UK, and the rest of Europe and and other parts of the world.

This book has been a labor of love and has come a long way from its genesis when I held one of my then-infant grandtwins who was in a very grumpy mood at the time. I started making up names for the grumpiness, and it led to book ideas, then better book ideas, and finally this book.

Grumbly and Gruffina Grumpadinkle are always grouchy. Their mood is always gloomy, the weather always glum—and not a single soul could make the Grumpadinkles smile, chuckle, or guffaw—not even a teehee! Until, that is, little Wendy asks the cantankerous, cranky couple to watch her puppy. “We’ve never had a dog before,” Grumbly says. “It sounds like he could be a chore.” With a grumble or two, the Grumpadinkles relent, and find themselves puppy-sitting a rambunctious, playful pup that makes a mammoth mess—icky eggs, shattered plates, and spilled milk everywhere! Find out what happens when a rascally pup turns their whole house—and grumpy lives—upside down. Russ Towne’s The Grumpadinkles delights children and adults, keeping them giggling with every fantastic, whimsical rhyme. Each vibrant page of artwork illustrates a life lesson for every child: how a simple act of compassion (even when you’re feeling sad) can turn a frown upside down and open the door to new friendship. For ages 3–7.

Christina Cartwright is the illustrator.

Dear Teenage Boy at the Skate Park…

Courage, kindness, and good parenting all in one post!
Russ

Kindness Blog's avatarKindness Blog

You’re probably about 15 years old, so I don’t expect you to be very mature or for you to want a little girl on your skate ramp for that matter.

Cambridge mom's thank-you letter to teen skateboarder goes viraWhat you don’t know is that my daughter has been wanting to skateboard for months. I actually had to convince her that skateboarding wasn’t for just for boys.

So when we walked up to the skate park and saw that it was full of teenage boys who were smoking and swearing, she immediately wanted to turn around and go home.

I secretly wanted to go too because I didn’t want to have to put on my mom voice and exchange words with you.

I also didn’t want my daughter to feel like she had to be scared of anyone, or that she wasn’t entitled to that skate park just as much as you were.

So when she said, “Mom it’s…
