My First Western Romance Novel!

I just finished the first draft of my first-ever western romance book. It’s now in the hands of my editor, and I hope it will soon be in the hands of many readers. It’s titled, “Longshots of the Heart.”

And my sequel to my best-selling children’s picture book “The Duck Who Flew Upside Down” could be released as a softcover book on Amazon’s site as early as tomorrow. It’s titled “The Ducks Who Flew Every Which Way.” I believe kids are going to love it!

May your days be filled with blessings.

A Romantic Experiment

meireles-neto-336081-unsplash

My experiment with turning my books into audiobooks has been a great success. They’re already outselling all other formats except ebooks, even including the direct sales of my physical books at book events (which tend to do well themselves.)

My next experiment is to write, (are you sitting down?), a western romance title, with emphasis on the romance. The cover image will make clear it is NOT an action western. Why? Excellent question! Except for my action-packed (aka violent) westerns, most of the buyers of all of my other genres are women. And when I display my top two selling genres (children’s picture books and westerns depicting violence on the covers) at book events, my sales of both genres are negatively impacted by the other. (in hindsight, that outcome should have been obvious to me.) And, in addition to action and war movies, my other favorite genre is the better-made RomComs. I love well-done comedy and happy endings. I’m a romantic at heart.

I may also consider some of my prior stories that were long on action and short on romance and re-work them for a romance audience removing all or most of the violence and turning up the romantic aspects. I think that will work for stories such as “Catherine and the Comanche.”

One of my first titles may be “Longshots of the Heart.”

May your days b filled with blessings.

Russ

Ute, Of Course!

simon-fitall-533515-unsplash

One of my current projects is an anthology about mountain men. My tale involves two desperate people from very different cultures who must work together to survive and to attempt to right a major wrong. One of the protagonists is a strong, determined young Indian woman who is wise far beyond her years. As I considered which of several tribes she could have come from, I leaned in the direction of the Shoshone. But then I learned the Ute tribe was also in The Rocky Mountains. One of my earliest supporters and long-time readers is a delightful woman named Ute. I selected the Ute tribe in honor of my dear friend from across The Pond whom I’ve never met in person.

May your days be filled with blessings.

Western Romance

The collaborative effort between Holly Bargo and me, Six Shots Each Gun, has been described as a western romance. I enjoy having a touch of romance in my western shoot-’em-ups and am toying with doing a project where action, suspense, and romance are provided in equal measures. Perhaps I’ll even collaborate with Holly on it if she is open to the idea. I love having a woman’s perspective when dealing with issues of romance and women in general. After all, I can only stretch my imagination so far!

Below is a link to an interview I believe you’ll enjoy about how SSEG came together as a project, my co-author, and this title.

Taxing Humor

To all who suffered the maddening tax forms and found you owe substantially more money this year than last, I offer my condolences and this humor, courtesy of http://www.mikeysFunnies.com:
There was once a young man who, in his youth, professed his desire to become a great writer.
When asked to define ‘great’ he said, “I want to write stuff that the whole world will read, stuff that people will react to on a truly emotional level, stuff that will make them scream, cry, howl in pain and anger!”
He now works for IRS writing tax regulations.

A Tax Funny

tim-doerfler-591849-unsplash

I rarely use the words “tax and “funny” together in the same phrase or title, but in the case of the joke below it seemed fitting. By the way, good luck with your taxes this year. May the total you owe be a pleasant surprise. (Sadly, if so, you’re pleasant result would be the exact opposite of that of everyone else I’ve heard from.)

“The IRS decides to audit Grandpa, and summons him to the IRS office.  The IRS auditor was not surprised when Grandpa showed up with his attorney.
The auditor said, “Well, sir, you have an extravagant lifestyle and no full-time employment, which you explain by saying that you win money gambling.  I’m not sure the IRS finds that believable.”
“I’m a great gambler, and I can prove it,” says Grandpa.  “How about a demonstration?”
The auditor thinks for a moment and says, “Okay. Go ahead.”
Grandpa says, “I’ll bet you a thousand dollars that I can bite my own eye.”
The auditor thinks a moment and says, “It’s a bet.”
Grandpa removes his glass eye and bites it.
The auditor’s jaw drops.
Grandpa says, “Now, I’ll bet you two thousand dollars that I can bite my other eye.”
Now the auditor can tell Grandpa isn’t blind, so he takes the bet.
Grandpa removes his dentures and bites his good eye.
The stunned auditor now realizes he has wagered and lost three grand, with Grandpa’s attorney as a witness.  He starts to get nervous.
“Want to go double or nothing?” Grandpa asks. “I’ll bet you six thousand dollars that I can stand on one side of your desk, throw that full glass of water into the wastebasket on the other side, and never get a drop anywhere in between.”
The auditor, twice burned, is cautious now, but he looks carefully and decides there’s no way this old guy could possibly manage that stunt, so he agrees again.
Grandpa stands on the desk and takes careful aim, but when he throws the glass, water covers the man’s desk, jacket, briefcase, and everything around it.
The auditor leaps with joy, realizing that he has just turned a major loss into a huge win.
But Grandpa’s own attorney starts crying and puts his head in his hands.
“Are you okay?” the auditor asks.
s
“Not really,” says the attorney.  “This morning, when Grandpa told me he’d been summoned for an audit, he bet me twenty-five thousand dollars that he could come in here and throw water all over your office and that you’d be happy about it!”

A Positive Surprise in Tough Times

robert-collins-333411-unsplash

It’s been a tough few years for the Rodriguez children. Both their parents died of cancer. But twenty-year-old Samantha stepped up and began raising her five siblings alone.   Their community got together and donated a new car to the struggling family.

His Wife Probably Wasn’t Laughing

ben-white-128604-unsplash

As the manager of our hospital’s softball team, I was responsible for returning equipment to the proper owners at the end of the season.
When I walked into the surgery department carrying a bat that belonged to one of the surgeons, I passed several patients and their families in a waiting area.
“Look, honey,” one man said to his wife. “Here comes your anesthesiologist.”
