Outsmarted by a 3-Year-Old

During the recent visit from our son Brian and his family I gave my 3-year-old grandson Zachary a couple of Graham crackers. I didn’t want him to have too many so I intentionally gave to him a couple of the ones that were already broken into squares. That way he could have two.

Zach ate them and asked if he could have more.

Me: “I’ll give you one more, but only if you promise not to ask for any more after that.”

Zach: “Okay.”

I handed another square to him. He didn’t take it.

Zach: “A rectangle, please.”

My Beloved and I exchanged looks of awe. The three-year old had just outsmarted his Grandpa. Again. (Sigh.)

He got the twice-as-large rectangle. I got yet another dose of humility.

“Hi, Shoe! Bye Shoe!”

At the start of a carousel ride while at Gilroy Garden’s amusement park yesterday, three-year-old Alex decided at the last second that the horse he was on was too big (shortly after he’d said he wanted to be on the big one). I quickly placed him on a smaller horse. In the process, he lost his shoe. It bounced and landed on the ground a few feet (no pun intended) from the carousel. I told him we’d get it when the ride was over.

As the carousel began to spin, I pointed out where his mommy stood waving at him. Rather than look for her and wave back, he focused on his “lost” shoe. Every time he saw it as we went around, he waved and said, “Hi, shoe! Bye shoe!”

More Pandemonium

Well, they’re gone. Our son Brian, wife Kristi, their three young children, and my Beloved left at 4 AM today, flying back to Maryland. (The latter to help them get through airports and while on the plane. She returns tomorrow.) It will probably be three or four months before we see them again, though we’ll likely visit them.

One night during their visit, when twelve of us were sitting in our living and dining rooms, the lights went out, pandemonium  erupted, babies and young children screamed while adults tried to calm them with, “Don’t move! It’s alright! We’ll get lights!” As we scrambled to light the night three-year-old Zachary fell from a chair face-first onto a hard bare floor. That lead to a bloody mouth and a late night trip to the emergency room.

He didn’t need stitches and will be fine.

There’s never a dull moment when the Townes get together. I plan to share other stories from the trip in later posts.

Russ

Highs and Lows

Our trip to the redwoods took two minivans for the twelve of us. The highway  was jammed with cars headed for the beach over the mountains, so we took a scenic, windy, two-laned road through the mountains that unbeknownst to us had been heavily damaged by recent mudslides. Two lanes became one, with alternating long lines of cars.  We were in heavy traffic for most of the ninety minute trip (a trip that would normally have been more like forty-five minutes.) That put us behind schedule and we decided to scrap plans for cooking dinner on our campout, and got fast-food hamburgers and fries instead.

Then three 3-5-year olds, their two dads, and I camped out in my Beloved’s and my  large backyard. It started a bit rough as the playful and energetic boys tried to “help” us as we raced to set up a new “six-man” tent before mid-dusk became total darkness. We lost the race, but had flashlights, and finished the job. The six men the manufacturers used to measure the tent capacity must have been Munchkins because it was a tight fit with three men and three small children.

After the tent was set up and the pads and sleeping bags were arranged inside it, we started a fire, made and devoured S’Mores, went on a night hike by flashlight, and sang campfire songs.  We showed the boys how to properly extinguish a campfire, and then went on a second night hike (due to popular demand), filed into the tent, and the young ones quickly began to fall asleep.

I believe we all had a good and memorable time.

I wasn’t so lucky today, however. The bathroom problems escalated. After three days without bathing I was finally able to take a quick shower, but as I got on my knees to bail out the tub for the next person, I slid one of the shower doors further open to make it easier to bail, and some key hardware at the bottom shattered. I watched in horror as the metal-framed glass-paned door slid over and down into the tub, one corner stabbing into the bottom, another skittering across the back wall, and a third banging into the side wall. Fortunately, the door didn’t shatter, though the critical pieces did. And none of the local hardware stores carry them. We’ve ordered the parts on-line, but it is going to be days before they arrive. We’re down to a single bathtub and a bailing operation until then.

Our cup runneth over with love, but if we’re not careful our tub may runneth over too.

Russ

Mustache Mania

Mustache Mania IMG_1083

Let’s face it, these guys are goofy!

Last night we decorated eggs for a week-early Ester celebration tomorrow. Photos to come in a later post.

We watched Thomas’ T-Ball game this morning and who the twins got bored to them to a nearby playground.

We’re heading for an ancient giant redwoods forest after lunch.

We plan to camp among a small grove of very young redwoods on our property tonight (and give the women a much-needed break from the three oldest and most energetic kids. They’ll still have the infants who are breast-feeding though.)

I apologize for my lack of reading your creations and commenting on social media. As you can see, I’m more than a little busy, but I plan to get back to being more active online when the the crowd heads home.

Never a Dull Moment (Day Two)

A rodent got into a wall of our tiny old home and died shortly before our visitors arrived.  The stink is most unpleasant in our guest’s bedroom, our bathroom, and the bedroom where my Beloved and I sleep.

The drain of our only bathtub/shower got clogged. It was not something that a liquid drain unclogged could fix. Or adult son (who is quite a good handyman) went under the house to clean out the trap and the 65-ish year old pipe broke off in his hands.

So, it was off to our local home repairs and supplies store for the second time in the first two days of their visit.

I wonder what surprises tomorrow will bring! Stay tuned…

With Love,

Russ

Never a Dull Moment

Our tiny home is overflowing with love. And noise. And craziness. The reason: Five grandchildren under the age of five. Our son Brian and his wife and three boys are visiting from Maryland, and our other son Ben, and his wife Kristi and son and daughter are visiting from locally to be with us and them. With our daughter Stephanie and her boyfriend, my Beloved and me, that makes lucky thirteen people and two medium-large dogs.

The latest wackiness: One of our three oldest grandsons came out of the bathroom with his head wet after using the toilet.

His Daddy: “Why’s your head wet?”

Grandson: “I washed my hair.”

His Daddy: “Where did you wash your hair?”

Grandson: “In the toilet?”

His Daddy: “WHAT!?!?”

Grandson: “I put my head in the toilet.”

His Daddy: “Before or after you peed?”

Grandson: “After.”

Have I said lately how much I love being a grandfather?

An Appreciating Asset

Our love is an appreciating asset.

The more we appreciate it,

The greater our love becomes.

Peculiar Perfection

Two lost and hurting hearts

Seeking love and protection

Risked great pain to come together

But found peculiar perfection.

Glitter and Glue

Of couples I’ve seen

Way more than a few

Where one is the glitter

The other’s the glue.
