An Amazing Trick to Keep An Open Bottle of Champagne from Going Flat

During a recent holiday gathering, a bottle of sparkling wine was opened but only half drunk at the end of the evening. Nobody wanted to finish the bottle off, but we didn’t want to waste it either. Someone suggested placing the handle of a metal spoon in the bottle (with the bowl of the spoon sticking out and resting on the rim of the bottle so the spoon can’t fall in), and putting both in the refrigerator. He said the next morning the sparkling wine would still be fizzy and taste fine.

Everyone else expressed doubts about the trick but we tried it anyway. The next morning we tasted the sparkling wine and it was as though the bottle had just been opened! It was just as fizzy too. We made very tasty Mimosa’s with it.

He said a lady told him about the trick and he’s tried it four times with Champagne and sparkling wine and it has worked every time. He doesn’t know why it works, but it does.

Dying Boy Closer to World Record

Dalton Dingus knows that the world really does care. That’s something that many adults in the world have yet to learn. Dalton is a little boy who is dying, but has his heart set on breaking a Guinness world record by receiving the most Christmas cards. I wouldn’t bet against him or the world.

Snippets:

He goes through 12 liters of oxygen a day and wears a face mask to help him breathe, making him look like a miniature fighter pilot with an interest in coloring and playing with Lego blocks.

For weeks since the cards started coming, Jessica Dingus said, Dalton’s health has improved.

“He’s doing pretty good now,” she said. “It’s just been the best Christmas ever.

“He’s excited for the first time in a long time,” she said. “He’s smiling more. He’s laughing more, he’s beginning to become how he was two years ago.

“I think just knowing people really do care for him, that the cards let him know people love him, it has all helped,” she said.

The cards can longer fit in Dalton’s home. The letter carrier can’t fit them all in her truck anymore, and a local television reporter has taken to filling a trailer to bring all the cards to Dalton’s grandfather’s church.

4 Things You Didn’t Learn In Driver’s Ed

I found this article informative and interesting. It contains updated strategies for driving safely.

A snippet:

A cop I know was once fiddling with the in-car computer with his right hand while driving the car with his left hand at 12 (the top of the steering wheel, for those of you young enough to be unfamiliar with analog clocks. We know you’re out there.) When the distracted police officer smashed into a stopped car, the force of the airbag deployment flung his hand back into his face, and he broke out his front teeth with his own hand.

That, my friends, is why you don’t drive with a hand at 12 o’clock. The 10 and 2 position, once the common wisdom of driver’s ed classes, is also dead (or at least it should be) thanks to airbags. The proper position is 9 and 3, while the Italian-esque 8 and 4 is more than acceptable. Don’t do those hand-over-hand turns anymore, either.

“Unbroken” Is Being Made Into A Movie

I believe I created a post sometime ago about a non-fiction audiobook I’d just heard called “Unbroken” about a most amazing man named Louis Zamperini. I’m excited to learn that a movie is being made about him. Here are some snippets about just a few of his incredible feats as the ultimate survivor:

-At 19 years old, Zamperini qualified for the Olympics in track and field after racing 5,000 meters for the second time ever.

-He wound up finishing in eight place at the Berlin, Germany, games in 1936. There, he met Adolf Hitler, who requested a meeting.

-He stole Hitler’s personal Nazi flag, which he still has to this day.

-Zamperini joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941, later flying several dangerous missions across the Pacific.

-In the summer of 1943 he was the only man of an 11-man crew to ultimately survive an attack on their B-24 over the ocean.

-Initially, Zamperini and two other crew members survived on a raft for several days, collecting rain water for drinking as well as the blood of the birds they would kill bare handed. Sharks would circle and brush up against their raft. One crew member died on day 33. The other two survived a total of 47 days.

-They drifted 2000 miles to the Marshall Islands, where they’re taken as prisoners by the Japanese.

-Zamperini became a prisoner of war, enduring constant torture and starvation for two years.

Love Is…

I love this cartoon and it’s message, and have learned that perhaps the most important time to show I care is when I’m most angry. When I can say “I love you” and mean it at a time when many other types of less-desirable feelings and words are bubbling up, they’ll know my love will always be there for them. It also reminds me how much I care for them and helps me to get over my anger sooner.

I have been ill with the flu or food poisoning. My Beloved took great care of me, and my dog Duke stayed and laid by my side. His devotion reminded me of a song I’d written to honor him and all humans and dogs who share a bond of love.

I mentioned earlier that I was going to more consistently write songs from my heart instead of focusing on a market or industry norms. "My Old Friend" is from my heart, and is my tribute to the special bond that many people have with their dogs, and to the bond shared by my old friend Duke and I.

I wrote the lyric. Kevin Harris created and played the music and was the vocalist.

I hope it resonates with you. The link at the beginning of this post will hopefully take you to the song if I set it up correctly.

Funk Relievers

“Some days there won’t be a song in your heart. Sing anyway.” –Emory Austin (Source: Online Wellness Network)

This sounds like good advice to me (as long as they are happy, uplifting songs). I also find that smiling, looking up, listing my blessings, hugging loved ones, doing a kindness for others, forgiveness of others and myself, reading uplifting books, watching comedies or uplifting movies, and being with or communicating with upbeat friends, all help to pull myself out of a funk.

I’ve also found that most negative, disempowering, envious, debilitating, and anger inducing thoughts are ego driven, and once I label them as such I’ve found it is much easier to quickly dismiss them and move on to more positive and uplifting ones rather than dwelling on the negative and re-running a series of old and negative messages my ego tends to conjure up if I let it.

With love,
Russ
