Spirit-Shiners

I just saw a saying that I like: “Spend time with those who make your spirit shine.”
(Unknown)

That sounds like wisdom to me.

I believe the use of such time is really an investment rather than an expenditure, and that if one also invests the time to become a person who makes the spirits of others shine, they would be improving themselves, and most likely make themselves happier while making the lives of others better, which makes the world better.

People are attracted to spirit-shiners, and are sometimes inspired by them to become spirit-shiners themselves!

And, even when a spirit-shiner is alone, they are in good company!

I’m blessed to have many spirit-shiners in my life, including many of you. Thank you! Shine on, my friends! My life and the world are better with you in them.

Love,
Russ

A Kindness Sandwich! I just found this site and really like it. I recommend that you check it out! Thank you Meg, from istopforsuffering for connecting us!

Rebecca's avatarThe Pledge of Kindness

Being hungry stinks….as you know by now I have a soft spot for people who are hungry. Today while out running errands, I stopped into the gas station to refuel. As I waited in line for my turn to pay I was watching the young man in front of me count out his change for his purchase. He had several drinks, a bag of chips and a small gas station sandwich. He appeared to be on his lunch break and I assumed the landscaping truck out front was waiting on him. Realizing he was short on his total he gave an embarrassed look at the clerk and said “sorry, I guess I don’t have enough just take off the sandwich.” He paid for the rest of the items and it was my turn to pay for my gas. I quickly asked the cashier how much was that guys sandwich? $1.89…

Believe

Believe There Is Good In the WorldI just saw this photo. Beneath it were two words that struck me like a drum echoing ripples outward and bouncing around in my brain:

“Truth beckons.”

So much message in two little words…

Ending The Cycle of Suffering

I just read a saying that perhaps not all that long ago I might have laughed at and agreed with, but now just saddens me:

“KARMA: No need for revenge. Just sit back and wait. Those who hurt you will eventually screw up themselves and if you’re lucky God and/or Goddess will let you watch.”

I believe that those who hurt me or others are already suffering. May their suffering soon end, and may I be able to forgive them rather than hope they be punished, for until their suffering ends, it is unlikely that they will stop hurting themselves and others.

May I be wise and loving enough to do my part to help end the cycle of suffering.

Meet My Old Friend Duke

Duke Photo for CD Baby The real one

My Old Friend-Final Mix

Here is a photo of my old friend Duke. I wrote the song “My Old Friend” as a tribute to him and to the special bond that many people and dogs share. A link to the song is included in this post. I thought some of you would like to see a photo of Duke. My co-writer on the song is Kevin Harris.

When I Think Of Gina

The poem below is written for, and dedicated to, Gina, one of my earliest WordPress supporters and a dear friend whom I much admire.

Thank you, dear Gina, for making my world better, brighter, and kinder.

Russ

When I Think Of Gina

When I think of Gina
I see a young girl running free
Through nature’s fields and forests
And the wonderful woman she came to be

When I think of Gina
A golden glow comes over me
From her loving heart and spirit
That she shares so generously

The Touch

When our children were young we were fortunate to have the option of being able to have a parent stay at home to raise our children while the other worked outside the home. My Beloved chose to focus her many talents on raising our children and I’m so glad that she did as they turned out wonderfully. She made a great full-time mom.

For the most part, I enjoyed being a part-time dad, but must admit that I missed much while I was away from my family. The story I’m about to share is one of those times.

My Beloved was one of those moms who took our kids to many interesting events, places, and activities. One of their favorite places to visit was the San Francisco Zoo.

One day, while at the zoo My Beloved took our two boys to the gorilla enclosure. A huge window separated the families of humans from those of gorillas. Our oldest son, Ben, was about four years old, and Brian was a very active one year old who was riding in his stroller at the time.

Ben was in awe of the gorillas and gently placed his little hand on the window, with his flattened palm facing them.

A giant silverback saw the gesture, walked over to the window, and gently placed his huge paw on the other side of the window exactly opposite Ben’s hand. They would have been touching if not for the window barely separating them. Ben wasn’t intimidated by the immense size of the powerful creature. As they stood there facing each other it was like a powerful connection was being made.

My Beloved said it was a magical moment that took her breath away. I feel the magic just writing about it decades later.

Russ

What You Need To Say

Never try to write what
You think people want to hear
Don’t try to please your readers
That’s not the way, my dear

If you want to make a difference
Write what you need to say
Because that’s the only thing
You’ve got to offer anyway

–Russ Towne

I read or heard a saying awhile that minutes ago inspired me to write the poem above to help remind myself of the wisdom in the message. (It might even be one of the writing-related quotes that WordPress shares.) I don’t recall the wording of the original saying now or who said it because I think it’s been awhile since I read it.) I think the last 3 lines of my poem are exactly as the person who coined the saying said them (but they weren’t on three lines). I’d like to give credit to the person who wrote the saying, so if any of you know who it was, please let me know.

A Picture Of Love

Man Saving Dog In A Flood

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. In this photo one word comes to mind loud and clear. Love.
