Living in Silicon Valley and having worked for high tech companies, I knew quite a bit about this subject and still found it illuminating. I think you will too. Thank you judysp for sharing it!

Overcome to Become

I just completed a comment on a friend’s blog with this sentence:

“I’m all-the-more proud of her because of what she has had to overcome to become who she is.”

I was referring to My Beloved but as I pushed the send button I realized that is true about many of the people I know. I factor in how much they’ve had to overcome to become the people they are today.

Some people start the race of life with the huge weights of as poverty, illiteracy, physical disabilities or deformities, mental or other illness, emotional roablocks, abuse, addictions, depression, terrible modeling by their parents, or no parents from early after their birth, and more.

I try to remind myself of their backstory. Sometimes someone might appear not to have come far in their lives until I’ve learned what they had to overcome to get there.

The world is full of backstories. We all have them. I wonder how much better I would treat everyone if only I knew the burdens they carried. When I am wise enough to think of such things, my words, thoughts, and actions grow kinder, and I become more patient, compassionate, understanding and forgiving.

In other words, I become closer to the person I’m focused on becoming.

This story touched me and I wanted to share it with you. Thank you GYA Today for spreading the word about this special boy. “What good deed did you do today?” What a great question for a parent to ask their children!

Breaking the Shell

I just saw this quote from a friend and like it, but I believe it is mostly accurate relating to emotional pain rather than physical.

“Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding.”
– Kahlil Gibran

I Love Happy Endings

Remember that bullied bus monitor? People from around the world have donated $700,000 to her to send a message that they’ve had enough of bullies and that most people aren’t bullies. Here’s a URL or link to a beautiful story about what started out as a very ugly incident.

Every Waking Moment

I was just enjoying some wonderful posts at TalkToDiana when I read this question from Diana:

“If you could post just one message to the world, what would it be?”

Below is my answer. I’d love to hear/read how you would answer that question.

We all have the power to create our own heaven and hell right here on Earth.

We can focus on becoming more kind, compassionate, generous, forgiving, and loving, and by doing so become surrounded by kind, compassionate, generous, forgiving, and loving people, or we can take the opposite approach and be surrounded by unkind, uncaring, greedy, unforgiving, and hateful people.

The choice is ours, every waking moment of every day of our lives.

The Great Blindini

I have a friend named Brent who is blind. He is also a magician. He calls himself The Great Blindini.

Here are some snippets from a recent newspaper article about him:

Magicians often don a blindfold at some point during their shows. For Brent Gifford, aka “The Great Blindini,” a blindfold would be redundant. Sightless since he was 11, Gifford has been amazing and entertaining folks with his comedy magic shows across the nation for more than 40 years.

His sense of humor is immediately apparent in one of his favorite sayings: “Now you see it, now I don’t.”

Gifford performs at libraries, schools, corporate parties, children’s parties, night clubs and pretty much anywhere he’s asked. He has performed at a monastery in New Mexico and at a nudist retreat.

Gifford has spent most of his life pushing through fear to live a life full of adventure and accomplishment.

“Everything you do comes down to love or fear,” he said. “I do things because I’m a teacher. I’m trying to forge the way for other people. I try to be an example to other people. That’s what keeps me from giving up and staying home all day.

While attending a school basketball game in his home town in Maine at age 11, Gifford’s vision loss hit suddenly. He stood to cheer when a friend scored for the first time and instantly became completely blind.

“I was really shy before I lost my sight,” he said. “I got over that somewhere along the line.”

At the young age of 14, the future Great Blindini made it his quest to live and perform in all 50 states. He has succeeded in living and working in 49 so far, with just Hawaii needed to complete his goal.

Next Post

Though the topic of this post is a bit outside the norm for my blog, I learned several interesting and clever heat-beating ideas from it and thought that with the heat waves that many are experiencing this information could be useful and perhaps even life-saving. Thank you for your informative and timely post, Gina!

To Love You More

I just heard the son of a buddy sing a song that touched me deeply. Here’s a link to it.

I was amazed at the level of talent and the power of the singer and the song. Apparantly it is originally from Celine Dione.
