Whims

“In a spy novel I had just read, the hero hid a letter in a particular statue in Washington, D.C.

“Since I was in that city at the time, on a whim I decided to see if the statue really contained the small niche the author had described.

“To my great surprise, it did — and a cellophane-wrapped letter was inside. After a moment’s hesitation, I pulled out the letter, opened it, and burst into laughter.

“An unidentified reader had penned, “Good book, wasn’t it?”

we are often too late with our brilliance. we are on time delay.

the only instant gratification comes in the form of potato chips.

the rest will find us by surprise somewhere down the road

maybe as we sleep and dream of other things.

The Devil’s Dance

I usually post my poetry on my poetry blog A Grateful Man’s Poetry at A Grateful Man’s Poetry rather than this one but in this case my heart whispered to include it on this site as well, and I’ve learned to listen to those whispers. I believe and humbly hope that some of you will be glad I did.

With Love,

Russ

The Devil’s Dance

Two once-proud armies

Were sent to war

Just to settle a score

By two old fools

Who wore crowns.

In the middle of the fight

The bravest young knight

Raged, “Life has no chance

In this Devil’s Dance,

Only Death wins an unjust war!”

He flung his weapons down,

On the killing ground,

Uncurled his fist and took a great risk

By extending his bloody hand.

The other man knew

He could cut him in two,

But sheathed the sword he bore.

That’s the fateful day when

Five thousand young men

Chose peace

And walked away.

I Write To Hear What My Heart Has to Say

You know that saying that goes something along the lines of, “He talks so much because he loves to hear the sound of his voice?”

I just realized that I love to write because it helps me to hear what my heart has to say.

Exhaustion

This post explains so much about how I felt before I began following my passions and how I felt afterward. I believe there is much wisdom in this post from Dr. Bill Wooten.

You know that the antidote to exhaustion is not necessarily rest?

“The antidote to exhaustion is wholeheartedness”

“You are so tire through and through because a good half of what
you do here in this organization has nothing to do with your true
powers, or the place you have reached in your life. You are only
half here, and half here will kill you after a while. You need
something to which you can give your full powers. You know what that
is; I don’t have to tell you.”

You must do something heartfelt, and you must do it soon. Let go
of all this effort, and let yourself down, however awkwardly,
into the waters of the work you want for yourself.

Our Imperfections Are What Make Us Unique.

A recent comment from “Mrs. P” reminded me about a decision My Beloved and I made  more than 38 years ago when we selected wedding rings for her. We intentionally selected two stones, a diamond and ruby (the latter being her birthstone) that had two small imperfections in them. The beautiful but imperfect gems were there to remind us that two imperfect people were joining together to create something beautiful.

Fast-forward six months: My Beloved’s cooking was so good that I gained 48 or 50 pounds (from a scrawny ~148 to a very un-scrawny 196 or 198.) Due to the dramatic weight gain I needed to have my wedding ring re-sized. When My Beloved returned it to me from the jewelers she had taken the liberty of having a two stones added to my band, a diamond and a ruby, with two minor imperfections in them.

Below is the comment from Mrs. P. that triggered my fond memories. I’m sharing it with her permission. Thank you, Mrs. P. I believe there is much wisdom in her words.

“I have come to believe…that our imperfections are what make us unique as individuals and a gauge in which we can measure the quality of our relationships. For example, my husband loves me with all of my imperfections. The opposite could hold true as well, you know the person who gets annoyed at your imperfections. You can sense it and it is not a fun place to be. I have worked hard to look beyond imperfections…that’s how I found my diamond in the rough! ;)”

You will say you don’t have 10 minutes to watch.  And then, you will say, why did it end so soon.

Watch this amazing TED Talk here: Dive into an ocean photographer’s world.

“Somersaulting manta rays, dashing dolphins, swarming schools of fish and munching sharks inhabit a world beneath the ocean’s surface that few get a chance to see. Conservation photographer Thomas Peschak visits incredible seascapes around the world, and his photos reveal these hidden ecosystems. “You can’t love something and become a champion for it if you don’t know it exists,” he says.
