My Beloved

Several of you have asked for update regarding Heidi. Her situation is improving. They put her back on one of the antibiotic drugs they thought was causing the allergy reaction and gave a different non-drowsy drug to her for the allergic reaction, and her healing is going faster now. Both meds have led to improvements. She can even briefly walk on the leg without excruciating pain.

Thank you for all your kind messages, prayers, calls, good wishes, and expressions of concern and love. Heidi and I have greatly appreciated them.

With Love,

Russ

I wanted to give to you an update regarding My Beloved. On the first day of our vacation to Disneyland with our grandson, his parents, and our adult daughter Stephanie, Heidi’s left leg was invaded by a super-aggressive infection. I took her to urgent care and despite a cocktail of three aggressive antibiotics, including some administered via IV, her leg from ankle to knee was completely affected and unrecognizable, and the massive infection was taking over her leg at a rate of about six to eight inches per day.

It turns out she is also allergic to one or more of the antibiotics, and the rest of her body (except her face) is now completely covered in huge welts and lumps. When they tried taking her off of some of the antibiotics the healing stopped but the allergic reaction didn’t.  She’s been seen by five doctors and two nurse practitioners, including related specialists, in SoCal and NorCal.  I believe there is no longer much risk of Heidi losing her leg, but we’re closely monitoring the situation.

With Love,

Russ

Lightly child, lightly.

“To display the lantern of soul in shadowy times like these – to be fierce and to show mercy toward others; both are acts of immense bravery and greatest necessity.” I agree that their is great need for more people to let their souls shine in the world, but I believe in many cases it takes no bravery at all. Being kind to others needn’t be an act of bravery, though it is certainly an act of love.

Ours is not the task of fixing the entire world all at once, but of stretching out to mend the part of the world that is within our reach. Any small, calm thing that one soul can do to help another soul, to assist some portion of this poor suffering world, will help immensely. It is not given to us to know which acts or by whom, will cause the critical mass to tip toward an enduring good. What is needed for dramatic change is an accumulation of acts, adding, adding to, adding more, continuing. We know that it does not take everyone on Earth to bring justice and peace, but only a small, determined group who will not give up during the first, second, or hundredth gale.

One of the most calming and powerful actions you can do to intervene in a stormy world is to stand up and…

“Big UPS to this DAD and all the DADS out there”…

Way to go, Dad, whoever you are!
With Love,
Russ

Kindness Blog's avatarKindness Blog

…on my flight back to Georgia I saw this man, who was a stranger to this woman, offer to help her because she was pregnant and alone on the flight and her son was upset and fussy.

He did not complain, he just told her that he was a DAD, and wanted to help her so she could rest.

This MAN walked the aisle most of the flight from Minneapolis to Atlanta comforting this woman’s son as if he was his own…

I was in tears…not because he was white and she was black…but because it showed me today that there are still GOOD people out there in a world full of turmoil.

Big UPS to this DAD and all the DADS out there…you are the real MVPS!”

To All the Mr. Millers Out There

RED MARBLES

I live in the south and was at the corner grocery store buying some potatoes. I noticed a small boy, ragged but clean, hungrily appraising a basket of freshly picked green peas.

I paid for my potatoes but was also drawn to the display of fresh green peas. I am a pushover for creamed peas and new potatoes.

Pondering the peas, I couldn’t help overhearing the conversation between Mr. Miller, the store owner, and the ragged boy next to me.

“Hello Barry, how are you today?”

“H’lo, Mr. Miller. Fine, thank ya. Them peas sure look good!”

“They are good, Barry. How’s your Ma?”

“Fine. Gittin’ stronger alla’ time.”

“Good. Anything I can help you with?”

“No, Sir…jus’ admirin’ them peas.”

“Would you like to take some home?” asked Mr. Miller.

“No, Sir. Got nuthin’ to pay for ’em with.”

“Well, what have you to trade me for some of those peas?”

“All I got’s my prize marble here.”

“Is that right? Let me see it” said Miller.

“Here ’tis. She’s a dandy.”

“I can see that. Hmm mmm, only thing is this one is blue and I sort of go for red. Do you have a red one like this at home?” the store owner asked.

“Not zackley but almost.”

“Tell you what. Take this sack of peas home with you and next trip this way let me look at that red marble,” Mr. Miller told the boy.

“Sure will. Thanks Mr. Miller.”

Mrs. Miller, who had been standing nearby, came over to help me.

With a smile she said, “There are two other boys like him in our community. All three are in very poor circumstances. Jim just loves to bargain with them for peas, apples, tomatoes, or whatever.”

“When they come back with their red marbles – and they always do – he decides he doesn’t like red after all and he sends them home with a bag of produce for a green marble or an orange one, when they come on their next trip to the store.”

I left the store smiling to myself, impressed with this man. A short time later I moved to Colorado, but I never forgot the story of this man, the boys, and their bartering for marbles.

Years went by, each more rapid than the previous one, until I recently had occasion to visit some old friends in my hometown. While I was there, I learned that Mr. Miller had died and they were having his visitation that evening. Knowing my friends wanted to go, I agreed to accompany them. Upon arrival at the mortuary we got in line to meet the relatives of the deceased and to offer whatever words of comfort we could.

Ahead of us in line were three young men. One was in an army uniform and the other two had nice haircuts, dark suits and white shirts…all were very professional looking. They approached Mrs. Miller, standing composed and smiling by her husband’s casket.

Each of the young men hugged her, kissed her on the cheek, spoke briefly with her and moved on to the casket. Her misty light blue eyes followed them as, one by one, each young man stopped briefly and placed his own warm hand over the cold pale hand in the casket. Each left the mortuary awkwardly, wiping his eyes.

Our turn came to meet Mrs. Miller. I told her who I was and reminded her of the story from those many years ago and what she had told me about her husband’s bartering for marbles. With her eyes glistening, she took my hand and led me to the casket.

“Those three young men who just left were the boys I told you about. They just told me how they appreciated the things Jim ‘traded’ them. Now, at last, when Jim could not change his mind about color or size, they came to pay their debt.”

“We’ve never had a great deal of the wealth of this world,” she confided, “but right now, Jim would consider himself the richest man in the world.”

With loving gentleness she lifted the lifeless fingers of her deceased husband. Resting underneath were three exquisitely-shined red marbles.

The moral: We will not be remembered by our words, but by our deeds.
