I Flew Like Superman and Crashed Like Wyle E. Coyote

When I was 16 I worked at a restaurant. After a large wedding reception, a man gave a nearly full case of Champagne to the restaurant staff as a tip. We were all 16-18. Amazingly, I was able to ride, wobble, and veer my bicycle home afterwards, but as I attempted to turn my bicycle into our approximately 20-foot wide driveway, I missed, hitting the curb next to it instead. I flew like Superman and crashed like Wyle E. Coyote head-first skidding along our dew-soaked front lawn.

And people ask me why I don’t want to go back and visit my high school days. Once was more than enough for me…

I'm awed by the beauty of nature and the power of love and gratitude. Some of my favorite sensory experiences include waves crashing on rocky shores, waterways in ancient redwood and fern-filled forests, and rain. My wife and I have been married since 1979. We have 3 adult children and 5 grandchildren. I manage a wealth management firm that I founded in 2003. My Beloved is a Special Education teacher for Kindergartners and First Graders. I'm a published author of approximately 60 books in a variety of genres for grownups and children.

Ha ha ha, pardon me; but i had to laugh at the image of you flying. I read a book when i was younger. Ade, our naughty little brother…story of a little boy who wanted to be superman and this post just reminded me of that lol.

  2. LOL. Oops. Good one Russ. My brother wanted desperately to be Superman and ran about with a sheet tied around his neck for some years. He indeed flew and crashed quite a bit. Did you do any other Superman stunts besides this one? πŸ˜€ Sharon

LOL! I’m laughing because I was so scrawny that when I got married I weighed only 148 pounds though I was 5′ 11.5″ tall. My build was closer to that of Icabod Crane than Superman. And I was 5′ 2″ until the summer before my Junior year in high school, so I was SHORT AND SCRAWNY as a kid. I was a chick magnet! Except that unfortunately or me one of the magnets was turned the wrong way and girls were repelled instead of stuck to me.

But that didn’t stop me from trying to be like Superman when I was a kid. I could bend metal bars err, spoons and coat hangars, and crush aluminum cans with my bare hands. (So could almost anyone else on the planet–including some that were still in elementarty school.)

My Kryptonite was any girl I had a crush on. That stuff nearly killed me. Superman ws smart enough to stay away from Krytonite, but not me. I kept falling fo and nearly dying from the stuff every time. I never learned.

But I did get lucky. I never had a crush on My Beloved. Instead of falling like a bag of potatoes and then getting mashed like with all the other girls, I grew to love her. Now, why didn’t I think of that earlier? There’s that slow-learner thing again… Sigh…

I hope that when your brother flew like Superman or was with those on whom he had a crush that he learned to crash better than I did. And I hope he now has someone who loves the man who still has the Superman dreams inside him.

      Russ
