Just Being Papa

My Beloved and I had our four year old grandson Thomas today while his parents were at the Sharks game. In the middle of lunch, Thomas looked up from his meal and said with a solemn expression on his face, “I know Duke is dead, but maybe he’ll come back next week.” What a blessing he is!

On a completely different note, when the the three of us were in the car headed home I got  a bit bored of a very repetitious song he’d been singing, so I decided to make up a silly song on the spot to distract him from the one he was repeating. I wanted it to be as silly as possible so it would crack him up, and easy for him to learn. This is what I came up with:

“If I drink stinky soup

From a cup

I might get sick

And throw it all up!

Blehhhuhhhaaaahhh!”

I sang it once and exaggerated the last line as though I was… (uh, what’s the polite word for puking?). He and My Beloved exploded into laughter. Of course she caught herself, and in a scolding voice said, “Papa!” But Thomas obviously has better taste in songs than she and yelled, “Papa! Sing it again!” So, being the good Papa that I am, I belted  it out again, with even more emphasis on the last line.

Each time I finished he was convulsed in laughter and yelled, “Sing it again.” Having once been a little boy myself –though very long ago–I knew the repetition he sought wasn’t just for the entertainment value, he was learning more of the song each time. So I kept going, singing the same words but in different tones, volumes, accents, etc. Soon he was singing along with me.

When we got home I sat in my special Papa chair and he sat on my knee. I suggested that he sing the song and that My Beloved make a video of it and send it to them while they were at the game. She went along with it and texted the clip to them.

When they saw the video, their text to us read: “Oh. My. God.”

I replied, “No need to thank me. I was just doing my job as Papa.”

With Love,

Russ

gargoyles.

Beth’s fun photo brought up a memory of something that happened when my middle son Brian was about the age of the boy in your photo. As I walked past his second-story bedroom, out of the corner of my eye I saw him begin to drop out of his window. Not fall, drop. I could see that what he was doing was intentional and that he hadn’t seen me, and I knew a concrete sidewalk was below him. I rushed through his room and leapt with my arms stretched toward him as far as they could reach. By some miracle I was able to grab an ankle, and hung on for dear life as I pulled him in. I was so shaken up that I don’t recall what he said as to why he did it. I think it was something along the lines of he wanted to see if he could fly or how it felt to fall through the air. Whatever it was, I recall that he had absolutely no fear, concern, or even thought about what might happen if or when he hit the concrete. He clearly wondered what the big deal was until I finally got through to him as to how dangerous it was.

My Old Friend is Gone

Duke collapsed yesterday morning and had a hard time getting up. I rushed him to the vet, they examined him and had me bring him to the emergency medical hospital last night. He kept getting worse and became non-responsive this afternoon.
Heidi and I just got back from the animal hospital. He faded so quickly they had to carry him into the the room we were in. We spoke to 5 vets of various specialties in the last 24-hours including my sister Anita via telephone who lives in Manteca. The bottom line is there was no hope. Based on the damage to the brain it appears to have been brain cancer and perhaps bone marrow cancer. His red blood cells were at 17% of normal. We said our final goodbyes and were there with him when he passed. I’ve had many dogs over the years, but none quite like Duke. I couldn’t have asked for a better friend. I work from home and he was always with me. His passing leaves a big hole in my heart but I have many wonderful memories of him. I’m grateful for the time we had together and the many blessings his being in my life gave to me.

Luck

It’s been my experience that there’s a great deal of difference between being a member of the Hard Luck Club and the Hard Work Luck Club.

Russ

P.S. No news from the neurologist yet regarding Duke yet, but I just spoke to my sister (who is a veterinarian but lives out of the area) on the phone and the odds aren’t good for a favorable outcome.

My Old Friend Duke is Having a Very Bad Day

My Old Friend

My old friend Duke is having a very a rough day. He collapsed and couldn’t get up this morning. I rushed him to the veterinarian. His red blood cell count is 18% of normal. The vet referred him to a specialist who believes the problem is neurological. Duke is spending the night at the animal hospital and in the morning is going to have a CT/CAT scan. The link above is to a song I wrote in his honor a few years ago. Actually, I wrote the lyric. Kevin Harris wrote the music and sang the song. I thought it would be a good time to share it with those of you who’ve not heard it before. It’s my way of introducing him to you. I’ve listened to it a couple of times tonight and am thinking of my old friend and how he’s always been there for me. He lays at my feet when I work and when I sleep. I’ll miss him a lot when he’s gone. He is high on my list of blessings. My eyes aren’t seeing too clearly as I type this.

Chances Are

Eleanor Roosevelt said many profound things. In this case, I believe that people who do things that interest them and do them with all their heart often inspire others to do the same, and that doing so while facing fear is an act of courage.

The greatest wisdom is in simplicity. Love, respect, tolerance, sharing, gratitude, forgiveness. It’s not complex or elaborate. The real knowledge is free. It’s encoded in your DNA. All you need is within you. Great teachers have said that from the beginning. Find your heart, and you will find your way.” ― Carlos Barrios, Mayan elder

I See Coincidence Everywhere

Perhaps “coincidence” is another word for miracles, because that is what I see everywhere. ;-D!

kmabarrett's avatarKevin Barrett's Blog

People are entirely too disbelieving of coincidence.  They are far too ready to dismiss it and to build arcane structures of extremely rickety substance in order to avoid it.  I, on the other hand, see coincidence everywhere as an inevitable consequence of the laws of probability, according to which having no unusual coincidence is far more unusual than any coincidence could possibly be.

work.

One of the accomplishments that has given to me lasting joy is finding work that is so fun and that I’m so passionate about that most of the time it feels far more like play to me than work. I consider that one my greatest blessings.
