Seeing What’s Right in Front of Me

IMG_2187-2

I’m now on my fourth office move within my home as the construction encroaches on prior locations. I’ve worked in the current location for several days. A few moments ago I happened to look up from my computer and instead of seeing a wall about thirty inches in front of me as I expected, I was shocked to see my face in a mirror. Not just any mirror. This one is a garish (to me) bright green and yellow and a quite large 3′ x 3′ square. It’s hard to miss, yet I’d been so buried in my work that I hadn’t seen it nor my face reflected in it all that time.

As an investor, I study companies, products, management, human nature, trends, track records, and many aspects of the world. As a writer, I create whole new worlds. I consider myself to be fairly observant, yet that mirror reminded me how blind I can be even to things that should be as clear as the nose on the face 30 inches from me.

I wonder how many other glaringly obvious things are all around me that I do not see and what it will take to open my eyes to them.

Russ

Looking for the Opportunity

“It has been said that true friends are hard to find. They may just be looking for the opportunity to step up and revel themselves.” –Greg Higgins

To Be or Not to Be…Funny

I just read that Romeoville is just north of Joliet in Illinois.

Some of the folks in that area have a sense of humor I appreciate!

Gratitude Comes Naturally

IMG_1447

I believe there is great wisdom in delighting in the blessings all around us. Gratitude comes naturally when we see with the eyes of a young child and experience with an open heart all the miracles of our wondrous world.

Anticipation

The door bell just rang. A surge of excitement races through me as I head for the door. I’ve been waiting for my first shipment of my latest book, Sir Alex Sleighs a Dragon. It’s supposed to arrive any day now. I’m surprised to realize how excited I am; a young child in a sixty-year-old body eagerly waiting to see what Santa has brought. I would think that by now, after writing, compiling, and publishing dozens of books, it would be old hat, but I believe I’m as giddy with anticipation of this one as I was with my first book 4-1/2 years ago. There is nothing like holding in one’s hands for the first time something that has taken a great deal of time, effort, and love, to create.

False alarm. My wait continues. C’mon, Santa. Please hurry. I’ve been a good boy.

Russ

She’s Covered

While at the home-warming party of one of our nieces and her husband this afternoon, a little girl walked into the center of the main room and coughed loudly. Fortunately for her, she covered a part of her head with both hands as she did so.

Her ears.

Life is Getting “Interesting”

The addition and remodel project on our home is going well. It should be completed in December or January. The roof of the addition is going on now. The wall separating the addition and the rooms to be remodeled will be demolished on Wednesday or Thursday. That’s when life is going to get even more “interesting.” The room that has been my large home office is being reconfigured and the beautiful fireplace in our living room in the center of our living room will be demolished to make room for a new hallway to join the old with the new. All of the furniture and other stuff in the office and nearly everything in the living room is being moved into our dining room and garage, making the former unusable for anything else and the latter half-full of boxes the contents of which we’re likely to need several times in the next three to four months It’s like being in a perpetual state of moving. Trying to find anything is becoming a challenging treasure hunt. As I work from home, I’ve already needed to move my office into three separate rooms (the most recent being the dining room). Now that I’m losing the dining room space, I’m not sure where I’ll be working from soon. Perhaps the roof. ;-D!

If it sounds like I’m complaining, I’m not. I’m actually grateful to be able to finally be able to give this gift to my Beloved. She’s waited many years for this remodel and addition to our tiny home. I am also grateful that since two bedrooms, our kitchen, and a bathroom will not be touched during the this project (other than installing double-pane windows in them), we’ll be able to continue living and working in our home during the entire project. I consider that to be a great blessing (financially and otherwise.) We’re going with the flow and (mostly) enjoying this great adventure.

It’s time I go back to work moving more furniture.

I Love How Young Children Think

On a recent FaceTime call with our younger son Brian’s family in Maryland, I heard something that brought a chuckle to me and I wanted to share it with you:

When one of the four-year-old twins saw a fuzzy caterpillar he exclaimed, “Look at the whiskers on his back!”

I love how young children think.

What I’ve Been Up to Lately

I’ve learned a lot in the 4-1/2 years since I published my first book. I’m putting that knowledge and experience to work not only with my new titles such as the recently released Sir Alex Sleighs a Dragon and Flora Belle and Dreami Dragon (both available in in hardcover and soft cover formats), I’m also creating enhanced second editions of some of my most popular earlier books.

In fact, I’ve just released second editions of Clyde and I and Clyde and I Help a Hippo to Fly. The stories are now even better and feature additional delightful illustrations from Josh McGill. Instead of the small squares of the first editions, these second editions are a larger 8.5″ x 11″ trim size. I believe new and long-time fans of Clyde and his friends are going to be pleased at the changes. In fact some of the changes are the direct result of fan feedback. Thank you for your ideas and suggestions!

You can find all four new releases and dozens of my other titles at Amazon.com just by typing “Russ Towne” in the search field.

With Love,

Russ
