Speak Softly and Carry a Big Heart

(Below is a re-post of one of my earliest postings to this blog from back in mid-2010. I’ll occassionally re-post something to give newer followers an opportunity to see it without having to wade through many old posts to find it.)

A friend who passed away several years ago was about 30 years older than me and lived large right up until his passing. He loved to surf and did so decades beyond the age when most people stop doing such strenuous activities.

Mel looked more like a retired business person than a surfer. He was soft spoken and a real gentleman. He had a mustache and an impish grin. For many years after his retirement he tutored students to help them to become successful in subjects with which they were struggling. He could be tough but tempered it with love.

He had a saying that I’ll never forget:

“Speak softly and carry a big heart.”

He not only said those words, he lived by them. They are part of a legacy of love that he left with so many people whose lives he touched. Mel, and his legacy, will be remembered long after he is gone.

I’m glad Mel was in my life. He made it a richer experience.

Follow Your Own Heart

“Follow your own heart, regardless of what others tell you to do. When all is said and done, it’s you who has to live with your decisions and how your heart feels about it.”

I don’t know who originated that quote but I believe much wisdom is contained in it. Not following your own heart seems like a recipe for resentment, regret, disallusionment, anger, sadness, and leading a less fulfilling life.

PAIN!

I’ve been blessed that most of my weeks are relatively good ones, but this hasn’t been one of them. This week could be described by a single four-letter word: PAIN!

Over the last couple of days I’ve had a fairly excruciating jaw-ache. I’d call it a tooth-ache but ALL the teeth on my left side (uppers and lowers) are in major pain. I’ve been to my dentist and two separate endontists and had four rounds of X-RAYS, and the pain is so wide-spread that they haven’t been able to localize it to a specific tooth or a couple of teeth, so they are having difficulty even trying to figure what to treat. I’m up creating this post at nearly 2am because even after taking three pain pills I’m in too much pain to sleep.

If you suffer from chronic pain, you have my sincere condolences. May you find quick and lasting relief!

My current condition reminds me that I haven’t been nearly grateful enough for my mostly pain-free life. I can better understand how great a gift being pain-free has been now that I’m reminded what it’s like to be in substantial pain.

I apologize for the whining. I actually attempt to keep this blog up-beat because I believe doing so and being optimistic are more likely to lead to a happier, more fulfilling and rewarding life. But I’ve gotta confess that tonight I’m just not feeling those positive things right now. Pain is crowding all that out. Hopefully I’ll soon be back to “normal” (I use that word loosely!)

Thank you for listening–err, reading!

“Dogs Welcome”

A friend just forwarded the message below to me. I got a chuckle out of it and thought you might too.

“A man wrote a letter to a small hotel in a Midwest town he planned to visit on his vacation. He wrote: I would very much like to bring my dog with me. He is well-groomed and very well behaved. Would you be willing to permit me to keep him in my room with me at night?”

An immediate reply came from the hotel owner, who wrote: SIR: “I’ve been operating this hotel for many years. In all that time, I’ve never had a dog steal towels, bedclothes, silverware or pictures off the walls. I’ve never had to evict a dog in the middle of the night for being drunk and disorderly. And I’ve never had a dog run out on a hotel bill. Yes, indeed, your dog is welcome at my hotel. And, if your dog will vouch for you, you’re welcome to stay here, too.”

Remember Why You’re Holding On

“The moment you think about giving up, think of the reason you held out so long.” –Michele Serens Mann

Sounds like good advice to me! Storms eventually end if you hang in there long enough. In the darkest nights and in the most brutal storms, I hope you’ll be inspired by memories of the warmth of the sun on your skin, and the light that accompanies new days and new beginnings!

I’ve also recently been reminded that sometimes a simple change of view or attitude; of the way I look at a problem, challenge, relationship, situation, or puzzle, can lead to solutions that had eluded me for a long time but had been right in front of me all along.

The Barefoot College

I just heard a “45 year love story” about the Barefoot College. It is a fascinating, enlightening, and inspiring TED talk presented by Bunker Roy. The school is only for the poor and reflects only what the poor think is important. No one with advanced degrees are admitted. They’ve re-defined “Professional” as possessing the combination of competence, confidence, and belief. There are no written contracts, crazy ideas are encouraged, it’s ok to fail, the teachers are the learners and the learnwrs are the teachers, and they don’t give out certificates, illiterate grandmothers are a key part of what they do, and a 12-year old girl is the current elected Prime Minister and is responsible for all of the Barefoot Colleges and students aound the world.

So, of course, the school is a phenomenal success! It now has 150 schools and 7,000 students in many of the poorest countries of the world. They’ve built schools for $1.50 per foot complete with solar power that provides ALL of the eectricity they need for each school. They have solar electrified many remote and terribly poor villages around the globe. Their first campus exclusively uses collected rain water in a system that is so effective that it is the only water needed for the entire school and they can go through four years of drought without running out of water. A parabolic oven cooks all of the schools food. It was invented by illiterate women.

He ended the talk with:

“Look for solutions within.”

“Listen to people.”

And then a quote from Mahatma Gandhi, “First they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they fight you. Then you win.”

Stunning Human Planet

The URL below is to a stunning Slide Show of People Around the World. I highly recommend it. It took the photographer Timothy Allen about 18 months to capture these amazing images. It’s part of the BBC series Human Planet. Here’s how they describe it:

“His stunning still images captured unique glimpses of people living in the world’s most extreme environments. Take a look at some of them, and listen to him explain how he snapped the most arresting shots.”

Much More Than A Pile Of Rocks

“A rock pile ceases to be a rock pile the moment a single man contemplates it, bearing within him the image of a cathedral.” Antoine de Saint-Exupery

MaggieMaeIJustSayThis shared ths quote. I like it and thought you would too.

I believe that the quote would be equally true if women and married men contemplated a rock pile in that way too. ;-D!

The power of thought can be incredibly transformational. At least that’s what I think! ;-D!
