Growing Gratitude Naturally

A friend posted:

“Begin each day with a grateful heart.”

I “liked” that saying, and replied:

“Is there any other kind, my friend? An “Ungrateful heart” seems like an oxymoron to me. I’ve heard of lots of folks with ungrateful minds, but I believe that when they use their hearts more, their gratitude will grow naturally.

I Like This Little Guy! Fly, My Friend! Fly!

At his request, each morning three-year-old Ray’s mother pinned a bath towel to the back shoulders of his size two T-shirt. Immediately in his young imaginative mind the towel became a brilliant magic blue and red cape. And he became Superman.

Outfitted each day in his “cape,” Ray’s days were packed with adventure and daring escapades. He was Superman.

This fact was clearly pointed out last fall when his mother enrolled him in kindergarten class. During the course of the interview, the teacher asked Ray his name.

“Superman,” he answered politely and without pause.

The teacher smiled, cast an appreciative glance at his mother, and asked again, “Your real name, please.”

Again, Ray answered, “Superman.”

Realizing the situation demanded more authority, or maybe to hide amusement, the teacher closed her eyes for a moment, then in a voice quite stern, said, “I will have to have your real name for the records.”

Sensing he’d have to play straight with the teacher, Ray slid his eyes around the room, hunched closer to her, and patting a corner of frayed towel at his shoulder, answered in a voice hushed with conspiracy, “Clark Kent.”

This is a wonderful story, Andrea. Thank you for sharing it. It touched me and I’m reblogging it so it can touch others. My favorite parts are his last two sentences, which go something like: “I won’t let my disabilities crush my dreams. We are a gift to the world.” He is indeed. As are you, my friend.

“We believe that people have a huge appetite for being genuinely welcomed, connected with, touched, appreciated, and genuinely cared for.”

When Tim Harris was fourteen years old, his dream was to one day own his own restaurant.  As he got older, he began to work his way through high school and college as a host in several chains such as Red Robin and Applebees, and took classes in Food Service in order to make his dream happen – just like many other young men do.  In 2010 he reached his goal, and a lease was signed and construction began on Tim’s dream.

What’s so inspiring about this story – besides the success of a young graduate – is that Tim Harris was born with Down Syndrome.  And when Tim’s Place opened in Albuquerque, New Mexico in June of 2012, he became the world’s first restaurant owner with Down Syndrome.

Like a shy but beautiful young lady,
Spring is slowly revealing her glorious beauty
And vibrant spirit in ever-more-colorful ways
For all the world to see a little more each day.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

http://biggeekdad.com/2010/04/dublin-school-demolition/

I may have heard this one years ago, but it was sent to me by a friend and I enjoyed listening to it again, especially the Irish accents on this Saint Patrick’s Day.

May it tickle yer funny bone as it did mine.

I think many students have had such thoughts on bad days, but this wee lass actually did something about it…

There Is Greatness In Goodness

My Beloved and I watched the new Oz movie a few days ago. I just flashed back to a scene in the movie where a man with many flaws who has wanted his whole life to be great and failed over and over again finally does something that is indeed great.

The woman he is with says something to him that is profound. It went something like this:

“Yes, you were great, but you were also something much better than that. You were good.”

The longer I live, the more I have come to understand the truth and wisdom in those words.

One can be great without being good, but there is greatness in goodness.

Sometimes It Takes a Hero, A Leader, And Teamwork

A boy is drowning in the ocean.

A crowd gathers on the beach.

A man runs out to try to save the boy.

Despite his best efforts, he can’t drag the boy and himself to safety and begins floundering.

The crowd watches, not knowing what to do or how to help.

A leader from the crowd emerges.

Just an ordinary man like the heroic rescuer.

Something needs to be done.

Right now.

He does it.

He calls out to others to form a human chain. People rush to help and join the chain.

The chain breaks.

It breaks again…

The Harmonica Man

He’s 77 years old, has had 10 heart surgeries, quit taking all 15 of the medicines he was given, and then he decided to make a difference in the world for thousands of children. You’ll be amazed at what he did and how he did it.

Seeing the Miracle

I believe that is both true and wise. I also believe it is true for each drop of water, grain of sand, snowflake, and all living things.
