How Marilyn Monroe’s Kindness Changed Ella Fitzgerald’s Life

I love to experience and share stories of kindness. They inspire and help me to feel more connected to the hearts and spirits of others and my own. Such experiences and stories sometimes even help to wash away that which was beginning to obscure my vision so I can better see the the beauty, kindness, and so many other blessings all around me.

Ella Fitzgerald was not allowed to play at Mocambo because of her race. Then, one of Ella’s biggest fans made a telephone call that quite possibly changed the path of her career for good. Here, Ella tells the story of how Marilyn Monroe changed her life:

Ella Fitzgerald & Marilyn Monroe

“I owe Marilyn Monroe a real debt… she personally called the owner of the Mocambo, and told him she wanted me booked immediately, and if he would do it, she would take a front table every night. She told him – and it was true, due to Marilyn’s superstar status – that the press would go wild. The owner said yes, and Marilyn was there, front table, every night. The press went overboard. After that, I never had to play a small jazz club again. She was an unusual woman – a little ahead of her times. And she didn’t know it.”

“Let’s Run Though the Rain!”

A little girl had been shopping with her Mom in Walmart. She must have been 6-years-old, this beautiful red-haired, freckle-faced image of innocence. It was pouring outside. The kind of rain that gushes over the top of rain gutters, so much in a hurry to hit the earth it has no time to flow down the spout. We all stood there under the awning and just inside the door of the Walmart.

We waited, some patiently, others irritated because nature messed up their hurried day. I am always mesmerized by rainfall. I got lost in the sound and sight of the heavens washing away the dirt and dust of the world. Memories of running, splashing so carefree as a child came pouring in as a welcome reprieve from the worries of my day.

The little voice was so sweet as it broke the hypnotic trance we were all caught in: “Mom, let’s run through the rain,” she said.

“What?” Mom asked.

“Let’s run through the rain!” she repeated.

“No, honey. We’ll wait until it slows down a bit,” Mom replied.

This young child waited about another minute and repeated: “Mom, let’s run through the rain.”

“We’ll get soaked if we do,” Mom said.

“No, we won’t, Mom. That’s not what you said this morning,” the young girl said as she tugged at her Mom’s arm.

“This morning? When did I say we could run through the rain and not get wet?”

“Don’t you remember? When you were talking to Daddy about his cancer, you said, ‘If God can get us through this, he can get us through anything!'”

The entire crowd stopped dead silent. I swear you couldn’t hear anything but the rain. We all stood silently. No one came or left in the next few minutes.

Mom paused and thought for a moment about what she would say.

Now some would laugh it off and scold her for being silly. Some might even ignore what was said. But this was a moment of affirmation in a young child’s life. A time when innocent trust can be nurtured so that it will bloom into faith.

“Honey, you are absolutely right. Let’s run through the rain. If God let’s us get wet, well maybe we just needed washing,” Mom said.

Then off they ran. We all stood watching, smiling and laughing as they darted past the cars and, yes, through the puddles. They held their shopping bags over their heads. They got soaked. But they were followed by a few who screamed and laughed like children all the way to their cars.

And yes, I did. I ran. I got wet. I needed washing.

I Raised My Voice Against Hatred. It Was Easier Than I Thought It Would Be and It Felt Good. – By Carmelene Melanie Siani

“I am your friend.” Some of the most beautiful words I’ve ever heard. I love this story and its simple yet profound message and reminder.

“They have the best Greek feta cheese you can get anywhere,”

my husband said, pointing to the Middle Eastern grocery store around the corner from our house where he and his late wife used to shop all the time.

“It comes from France.”

Hm. Greek feta cheese from France. How enticing.

“I’ll check it out,” I told him.

Thus began, three years ago, my almost daily trips to that wonderful little corner of the world, the Middle Eastern market.

From the big sheets of warm-from-the-oven flatbread stacked next to the cash-register, to the six to eight varieties of glistening olives crowded together in bins under protective glass, to the boxes of fresh produce stacked on the floor all bearing labels from small California farms, to the colorful half gallon cans of imported oils, the marmalade from England and the chocolate bars from Germany, I have always managed to find something…

story.

Thanks to Beth, I’ve just found my new motto for writing children’s stories. I’ve written my children’s books so that parents and grandparents would enjoy them as much as children, and this quote Beth posted perfectly fits that focus.

Today’s Quote

I love this quote and the image with it. One of the things I love about about being a writer is that I can not only see the world, I can create whole new worlds for others to discover.

Pick Three They’re Free

To an amazing degree, books from newer authors live or die by the number of reviews they receive. So, I’ve just decided to offer up to three of any of my eBooks in any genre as free gifts from me for everyone who is willing to read and write an honest review of them.  This is a limited time offer and subject to cancellation at any time (Since I’m paying for the the gift copies I need to make sure I have a way of pulling the plug if I start getting more requests than my budget can handle.)

You can find and read about my eBooks at:

My Author Page

Once you decide which eBook(s) you want, simply email me at russtowne@yahoo.com and let me know which one(s) you want. I’ll send them to you as gifts via Amazon.com. If you take me up on this offer and do the review(s) please be sure to include this sentence in the review:

“I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.”

I want to keep everything above-board and to stay in Amazon’s good graces.

Thank you!

Russ

One of Life’s Highest Honors

Reading this brought tears to my eyes. It hit close to home. We’ve been visiting my father-in-law in intensive care twice a day for quite a while. Any day could be his last and nearly all his faculties are completely gone. I love the man and he’s always been good to me. We’re from different races and cultures and he was a quiet man who rarely spoke even when he was young, but we respected each other, and to this day show that we still do. It grieves me to see what he’s going through. I consider it an honor and blessing to be able to be there for him.

It was once said that the reason that humans are put into this world is to help and encourage others. Think about it. What makes you the happiest? When you are receiving something or getting something?

The most important things in life aren’t the things that you can see…like money, houses, boats, clothes, etc. The things in life that REALLY matter and have infinite meaning to people, are the things that are priceless and unseen such as kindness, love, thoughtfulness, etc….ways that you TREAT others.

Today’s short story is a great example of the ULTIMATE way that a person can repay someone with kindness and goodness.

A son took his father to a restaurant for an evening dinner.

The father, being very old and weak, while he was eating, dropped food and his shirt and pants. Other diners watched him in…

What Do You Think?

I’m continuing to play this weekend on my book of poetry the working title for which has been Glimpses (as in “Glimpses of my Heart and Spirit.” You can see some of my poetry at  Grateful Man’s Poetry

I’m attempting to put my poetry into some semblance of order and would love and appreciate your input on a couple of things. I began sorting them via topic and created a category I temporarily labeled “Miscellaneous” for those creations which didn’t fit neatly into any of the categories I’d created nor any single category I could think of. Of course it wouldn’t do for a poet to use such a bland and lifeless word as “miscellaneous” as a category in my book, so I tried to come up with a more poetic description of the quite varied and always-changing types of poetry in that section.  I came up with the word “Kaleidoscope.” I found I was putting most of my poetry in that section.

Then two thoughts occurred to me almost simultaneously:

One can glimpse into a Kaleidoscope. Pehaps I should change the name of the book to Glimpses in a Kaleidoscope. What do you think? Should I change the name to Glimpses in a Kaleidoscope or stay with Glimpses?

Some readers like to be able to go back and easily find favorite pieces so I’d planned to create a Table of Contents of the various categories. Since most of the poems are in the Kaleidoscope section, I’m now questioning whether I should even have categories.  I could also alphabetize them to make them easier to find. Which of the three options do you recommend? I’d love to hear what you think!

With Love,

Russ

Shakespeare’s birthplace and The Roald Dahl Museum

You might think there’s nothing to link Roald Dahl and William Shakespeare, but there are a few things they have in common…

They’ve both got big anniversaries this year:
2016 marks 100 years since Roald Dahl’s birth, and 400 years since Shakespeare’s death. That means 2016 is a pretty great year for celebrating the lives and works of these two world-famous writers.

They both made up some crackling words:
Shakespeare coined countless new words and phrases, many of which have found their way into common usage, including ‘wild goose chase’, ‘laughing stock’, and ‘heart of gold’. Roald Dahl invented quite a few words of his own, especially while writing The BFG – who can forget snozzcumber, gigglehouse and exunkly?

Both authors have their very own dictionaries, both published by Oxford University Press. The Oxford Illustrated Shakespeare Dictionary and The Gobblefunk Dictionary (coming in…
