T.G.I.F.: Teetering on yourself

“Teetering on yourself” I like the vision of that.

You push yourself to the edge
until you become the edge and teeter on yourself–
but there is no edge,
only new modes of consciousness swimming into one another.

Today’s Quote

I love that her first name is “Joy” as I believe one is likely to create much joy in their life and the lives of others when they find and share their gifts.

My First Rejection Letter from a Literary Agent!

I just received my first rejection letter from a literary agent! That makes me feel somehow more official as an author. I wrote “Rejection #1” and hung it on my writing room wall. Methinks it’ll soon have plenty of company.

When I read this post it reminded me I should be more like young children: In wonder and at everything.

firewood

The ordinary moments of our daily life may appear commonplace, but in reality they are not so; they carry enormous significance. To polish a pair of shoes, to serve a helping of apple pie, to break bread, to chop firewood- these can be lordly activities. Any action performed with a sense of reverence, of care and of pleasure, can become what I would call a sacrament. Zen, in particular, lays emphasis on ‘everyday life’ as the real path to the great mystery. One of its Masters, Joshu, replied to a question about the true nature of the Great Way, the Tao, by saying, “Our everyday life, that is the Tao.” It is the worship of the moment’s duration, inviolate, detached, and passionate. It is the observation of the sunlight on a bald of grass, the sight of a beetle crawling across a leaf; the worship of the day’s most commonplace…

Literary Agent Query Letters

I’ve taken the plunge and begun sending out query letters to literary agents. I made a goal for myself: “Query 3 Before TV.” I sent my first three letters last night and treated myself to some TV. Today I hope to complete three more. Each agent has their own set of specializations and submittal guidelines so I’ve got to determine which agencies are the best fit to submit, then to which agent in each firm to send the query (they often specialize in different things and an author can only send to one agent within each agency), then which of my stories is the most likely to be of interest to that agent, and then I need to write the query letter and send the story while being sure I follow their guidelines exactly.

It is somewhat tedious and time-consuming, but it’s also interesting and I’m learning quite a bit as I go along. Each is a very, very, long shot. I’ve heard of great award-winning authors that got over 100 rejections in a row, and it appears most authors never get signed no matter how many query letters they send. Even if one is able to sign with an agent, there is no guarantee that they’ll be able to sell an author’s work to a publisher, and even if a publisher buys the book, the mount of money paid to the author might be quite small and paid in portions only if milestones are reached. The book itself could be far from a commercial success. Suffice it to say, I have no plans to quit my day job (which I love as much as writing anyway.)

Still, what the heck? It’s a fun and challenging adventure in which I’m learning more about myself and the world, so that alone makes it well worth the ride.

Then You Walked By

I love this poem and wanted to share it with you.

melodylowes's avatarMeanwhile, Melody Muses...

march-iceHe was desert.

I, so thirsty, swallowed sand

Until I mummified.

He was iceberg.

I, so frozen, craved his warmth

Til all was numb inside.

Then You walked by –

Waterfalls and rip-tide seas

That made these cracked lips burn.

Summer Sunburst

Melted rivers, carved new clefts,

Uncovered long-dead urns.

And oh! the pain

As figments of sandcastles

Collapsed beneath my toes.

And oh! the ache

As Light revealed the chaos

I’d buried deep with snow.

You are water.

I, so thirsty, drink You in,

Til my cup overflows.

You are Sunshine.

I, so frozen, snuggle deep,

And Your arms hold me close.

For the First Time Ever

For the first time ever I’ve decided to begin pitching some of my stories to literary agents. I’d love to hear from you as to which of my stories you liked the best. It may help me to decide which to pitch.

I’ve done quite a bit of research about writing query letters and have identified several literary agents that appear to be most interested in the kinds of stories I write, but the odds are daunting. Some agents say that they only represent two or three out of every one- or two- thousand queries, and many don’t accept queries at all.

Russ

The Ransom

Hate holds its self-imprisoned hostages at the intersection of Fear and Ignorance. A ransom of Kindness is key to their release.

Book Quote Corner #42

I’m often in awe when opening a book for the first time that the author’s story has patiently waited for me, sometimes for centuries, to be released as a genie from a bottle for me to experience the treasures within. Together, the author and I bring the characters and stories to life in a way that is unique to us. What a blessing it is that every reader can do the same.

Russ
