The Open Window

The Open Window

 I just opened a window.

 In the space

 Of a heart-beat

Magic happened.

 My senses

 Are aroused

 By sumptuous melodies

 Of songbirds

Singing so near

 It seems

 They’ve flown

 Into my office

 To share their gifts

 With me.

 The scent of rain

 And flowers

 Meld

 Into potent

 Olfactory pleasure.

 Inches away,

 Great multi-colored blossoms

 Capture my eyes,

 Each vibrant petal

 An invitation

 To soak

 In its beauty

 And experience

 Exquisite softness

 With a touch.

 In this moment,

 Life-diminishing

 Concerns

 Disappear.

 LIVE!

 Really LIVE!

 That is what

 I do

 When I remember

 To remove

 The blinders

 Of everyday distractions

 From my heart and senses

 And truly

 Experience

 The wonders

 All around me.

 A profound

 Sense of gratitude,

 Joy,

 Connectedness,

 And

 Peace

 Envelops me.

 A bit of sadness too,

 For having let

 Lack of mindfulness

 And

 A thin

 Pane of glass

 Separate me

 From all these blessings.

 The sadness

 Doesn’t last.

 How could it

When surrounded

 By

 So many

 Miracles?

Yes there are miracles everywhere even inside! Great poem!

  5. Makes me miss a window even more…..working in the middle of the building in fully enclosed room without a window. Though I can apply this to more than a literal window. Beautiful Russ!

“Though I can apply this to more than a literal window.” You can indeed. I hoped readers would pick up on that. Thank you for letting me know that you did. I appreciate your kind comment.

I have always felt the wonder of nature and it’s perhaps the reason I prefer fresh air to air conditioning at home. Rick on the other hand seemed most disinterested until I put a bird feeder right outside our bedroom window. With so many beauties coming to perch and nibble it’s hard to ignore. Grateful for the food (always the best variety) they sing their praises. Now when I am off to work he watches them whenever he sees a squirrel absconding with the feed he chases it away. Quite often he reports on their activities when I come home…grateful for their company and pleasure.

Your comment brought a smile to my face. I’m glad Rick has his feathered friends to keep him company and add their songs to his day while you’re away.
