“When a child gives you a gift, even if it is a rock they just picked up, exude gratitude. It might be the only thing they have to give, and they chose you to give it to.” –Unknown
I believe that applies to people who give a smile to me too.

About russtowne
I'm awed by the beauty of nature and the power of love and gratitude. Some of my favorite sensory experiences include waves crashing on rocky shores, waterways in ancient redwood and fern-filled forests, and rain. My wife and I have been married since 1979. We have 3 adult children and 5 grandchildren. I manage a wealth management firm that I founded in 2003. My Beloved is a Special Education teacher for Kindergartners and First Graders. I'm a published author of approximately 60 books in a variety of genres for grownups and children.
the praise of the innocent and true is the highest reward.
:-D!
This little gem will brighten the day of a certain kindergarten teacher I know. Gonna pass it along. Thank you!
My Beloved teaches Special Ed Kindergartners and First Graders. I’m glad to create anything that might brighten the day of teachers and those in many other professions that I hold in high regard.

It sounded exactly like something my friend Harold would say, so I had to pass it along to him. 🙂
:-D!
Love it but be forewarned some youngens like my daughter had alternative motives like, “Mommy, can I get you a cookie?” Translation: Mommy by offering you a cookie it is implied that you will say yes and get one for yourself too!
LOL! Having had three youngsters of our own, we’re quite familiar with that ploy. It often worked too! Thank you for the warning Diana!

Could it also be because of the warmth and familiarity the child feels in that moment? Or could it be the child’s need to engage you? Or could it be something as pedestrian as the child merely choosing to play a game?

I like to believe it is a child’s way of showing they love the adult to whom they are giving the special gift.

That’s so true – because sometimes a smile is all they have to give 🙂
Yes, and sometimes even those don’t feel that easy to give for people who are having a bad day or bad life. Sometimes they simply have no more to give. It feels especially good in those situations to give them one of mine.
Russ
That’s how I feel too :-). I never take it personally if someone is quiet or doesn’t seem interested in interacting. I figure they may be having a very bad day and show them extra kindness.
That sounds like a wise and kind approach to me, Meg.
