A Dying Wish: BIG Tips

A man not quite thirty years old had an interesting last wish: After I’m gone, give BIG tips to food servers. So far, three $500 tips have been given and more than $50,000 has been collected to be given out at the rate of $500 per lucky food server each week.

My wife and I have been married for over 33 years. We have 3 adult children and recently became grandparents for the first time, with a second one on the way! I founded, own, and operate an investment management and advisory firm. My wife is a Special Ed teacher for Kindergartners and First Graders. In addition to our family and friends and my profession, my passions include writing poetry, song lyrics, and non-fiction short stories; tending a fern garden and small redwood grove on our property, hiking in ancient old-growth redwood forests, and watching old movie classics.

This is so cool, russ, but,why wait till you or me or anyone is “gone” ,surprise someone with an act of kindness now, and perhaps they will do the same, and on it will go! I have seen someone pay for an elderly persons grocery bill as they struggled for the money, or for school supplies, when the parent had this wary look of “I can’t afford this”. Ive know people to “gift” an old car instead of trading it in on a new one. Even little things matter, compliments to a new employee having a rough day, telling someone they look nice when you can tell they don’t feel like they do. It is so easy to be a better person, yet so few of us do it. If we don’t have %00 dollars, we can give a smile with a lot less, if we do have it, I am sure that the kindness would be worth it. Do you remember the saying by possibly the Blood bank people–it went something like, “Don’t give until it hurts, give until it feels good. You inspired me, Im gonna try to do just that!
